The Kings XI Punjab beat the Deccan Chargers by one run in a tense encounter in Johannesburg.
Some big hitting from Rohit Sharma looked to have taken the game away from Punjab after a hat-trick from Man of the Match Yuvraj Singh got them back into the encounter initially.
With Deccan needing just 11 runs for victory off the last over, Singh turned to Irfan Pathan who produced a brilliant final over which keeps his side in contention for a play-off spot.
Adam Gilchrist and his men will be bitterly disappointed having looked set to record a win which would have put them in a prime position to qualify for the semi-finals.
A poor effort from the top order, and some tight bowling from the Deccan Chargers’ spinners, helped restrict the Kings XI Punjab to 133.
After four early wickets, Kumar Sangakkara led a recovery for Punjab with 56 from 43 balls, but failed to see out the innings and ensure a more competitive total. RP Singh was the chief destroyer for Deccan picking up 3-26 off his four overs – earning himself the purple cap in the process.
Both sides are now locked on 14 points with one game to go and both will require wins in their final round-robin games if they are to stand a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the competition.
Punjab – 134-7 (20 overs)
Kumar Sangakkara 56, Yuvraj Singh 20, RP Singh 3-26.
Deccan – 133-8 (20 overs)
Rohit Sharma 42, Vuvraj Singh 3-13, Ramesh Powar 2-11.
Punjab win by one run.
