It’s all grey for Affies
17 May 2009
Grey College claimed their 42nd consecutive home win when they beat Affies 30-13 in Bloemfontein.

While Grey ran out comfortable winners in the end, the first half was a tight affair with Affies taking the game to the hosts. The forward encounter was bruising and unrelenting as both sides tried to gain the upper hand.
It was Grey who broke the shackles just before half-time with a try from scrumhalf Pieter Rademan. Affies surged back and kicked a penalty to leave the game delicately poised.
While another Affies penalty soon after the break narrowed the gap to one, it was all Grey from then on with the hosts scoring 23 unanswered points in the next 15 minutes.
Grey props Stefan Coetzer and Marcel van der Merwe barged over for tries, with flyhalf Johan Goosen controlling the game well with his boot. Goosen also kicked three conversions and three penalties for a personally tally of 15 points.
Affies attacked vigorously for the last 10 minutes of the game and scored a consolation try on the stroke of full-time.
Grey’s tight five set the platform for their victory and No 8 Neil Jordaan was once again outstanding at the breakdown.
Grey College now have a week off before facing Grey PE at home, where the Bloem boys have not lost since 2006 (to Paul Roos).
‘That break will do us the world of good,’ coach Ingo Machts told keo.co.za. ‘We have a few niggling injuries and those players need some time to recover.’

I will appreciate it if someone can tell me when was the last time that Grey Bloemfonteyn lost a match and against who?

The last time Grey College lost was in August 2006 against Paul Roos in Stellenbosch.
Think the last loss in Bloem was against Affies, May 2005 against Affies 27-20.
Grey’s win percentage since 1966 is 93%. No school comes even close to that.

Thanks.
The game between Grey/Paul Roos at Stellenbosch later in the season should be a humdinger!
Paarl Gym does not seem to have a very good team this year having already lost to Bishops,Paul Roos and Boland Agriculture.

According to a fixture list I have from my old school Grey Bloem play Grey PE in Bloem on 1 August, not next weekend as stated in the match report above. Grey PE play Paul Roos in PE next weekend – should be a great game.

Cris Paarl Gym also lost to Monnas and Waterkloof in 2009.I can not see any schoolboy team beating Grey Bloem in 2009.Maybe only the Bulls!

The victory was Grey’s 42 succesive victory home and away not home victory as the story states. Grey’s last defeat was against Paul Roos (11-16) in 2006 in Bloemfontein.

That 2007 side will go down in history. Best schoolboy side ever.
The 08 and 09 sides are awesome as well, but 07 was a freak year

What worries me is what is happening with all the great Grey talent after school , if the Cheetahs can retain this talent then they should with all reason be doing so much better .
Have your say
