Landbou upset Paarl Gym

Boland Landbou claimed their first win against Paarl Gym since 2001 when they triumphed 14-12 at home.

Both sides recorded losses last weekend – Landbou to Bishops (19-15) and Gym to Paul Roos (47-36) – so Saturday’s game was a must-win encounter for them.

Playing at home with wet underfoot conditions and a strong wind, Boland Landbou made better use of their possession in the first half and kept Paarl Gym pinned in their own territory for the majority of that time.

Landbou, having won the toss, played with the wind at their backs. This decision paid dividends as the home side scored two converted tries through centre Werner Joubert and left wing Ian Loots to lead 14-5 at half-time.

With 15 minutes remaining in the match, Gym’s Christiaan Smit crossed for his second try, which was converted by William van Wyk to make it 14-12. While Gym pushed hard for another score, the hosts’ defence held firm.

‘We are delighted with the victory,’ Landbou coach Johan Schreuder told keo.co.za. ‘The unsung heroes were the tight five who took on the Paarl boys upfront. We upset their set phases and pressurised them into making errors at crucial times.’

Paarl Gym have now lost two games in a row, while Landbou’s confidence will have been given a boost ahead of their match with SACS in two weeks’ time.

Meanwhile, storm weather in Cape Town accounted for the cancellation of SACS’ visit to Bishops, while Rondebosch Boys High were also unable to host Paul Roos.

“Boland Landbou claimed their first win against Paarl Gym since 2001 when they triumphed 14-12 at home.” Information is incorrect, what about 2006?

Paarl Gym in 2009 lost against Bishops in a 40 minute game at Newlands. They also lost 70 minutes games against Waterkloof,Monnas,Paul Roos and Boland Landbou. Will be interesting to see how they go against Outeniqua,Bishops(if they play them)and Paarl Boys High.It could still be a long tough year for them.

#3 Esterca-according to Johan Schreuder and Frikkie van Zyl the 2 coaches of the Landbou side BL last defeated Gym in 2001 when Derick Hougaard kicked Gym to pieces. Those facts have come from the coaches themselves-not the reporter.
