The signing of former New Zealand lock Chris Jack will give Western Province a much needed lift for the 2009 Absa Currie Cup.
Jack is one of many Saracens players leaving Watford and has been cleverly snapped up by Rassie Erasmus. Premier No 5 Andries Bekker will be away for the majority of the domestic season, so to have Jack’s experience and ability is an undoubted boost.
Lock AJ Venter has retired and the injured Adriaan Fondse will miss the first half of the Currie Cup season. That leaves Hilton Lobberts, a retreaded flank, and the likes of Martin Muller who is yet to play Currie Cup rugby.
Jack will only join Province for the domestic competition and intends to head back to Christchurch to represent the Crusaders in 2010. It’s a move that could put him in the running for a Test recall come the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand.
