Cheeky chuffed with expansion
20 May 2009
Cheeky Watson believes the new Super Rugby conference structure would suit a fledgling franchise like the Southern Kings.
The Kings want to be included when the competition expands in 2011. South Africa will compete against Australia for the rights to the 15th franchise, and should they win a place it means the Kings will play all their conference games in Australia.
‘It is good news for EP rugby because the teams will be playing in conferences which means there will be a lot less travelling. So it will cut down on costs,’ Watson told the EP Herald.
‘We do not know when we will be able to start the tender process because we are still waiting on Sanzar. However, we are very excited about this decision because it will benefit us in the long run.’
The Kings franchise will be launched on 16 June when they face the British & Irish Lions in a tour match in Port Elizabeth.

They are going to tender for the spot open in Aus, which means they will be based there.
20 May 2009, 12:16 pm
Cheeky ‘WANTS’ to be included… how about ‘EARNING’ an inclusion… you’ve got two years to become competitive in the CC and hopefully challenge the wooden-spooners for a relegation position…

Add Kabamba, Bevan Fortuin, Kobus Caldo and SollyT please.
20 May 2009, 12:27 pm
For any foreign readers, please note that the overwhelming majority of South Africans DO NOT want a 6th franchise in the 2011 S15.
It’s only plonkers like Cheeky Watson, who are only driving their own agendas.
It’s a silly idea. Give Melbourne a team.
By all means, let the “Southern Kings” play in the Currie Cup for now, but heaven forbid they play out of Australia in the S15 (the Bulls and Sharks struggle to win in Aus, can’t imagine what a cake walk the Kings would be based in Australia for half a year…)
20 May 2009, 12:31 pm
Pity for Cheeky that the 15th francise will go to the Aussies, thankfully. We just dont have enuf good quality players in the country to have 6 six teams
20 May 2009, 13:12 pm
So let’s say the Kings win the tender and become the 15th team (based in Melbourne).
Which SA players will want to play for them if it means living in Australia for half the year? How does that build rugby in the Eastern Cape?
Cheeky seems not to have connected all the dots yet.

20 May 2009, 13:17 pm
How can a team based in Oz be good for LOCAL rugby support in the EP?
It can’t. It can benefit Cheeky financially but if they don’t get down to tests in East London I doubt they’re gonna take their Chokka boats to Melbourne for the weekend…

#15 klippies101: the Watson family are much like the terrorists. They take what they want from the bible/koran and twist it to mean what they want it to mean and then martyr themselves in their crusade.

3 out of 4 of our teams are competitive and were in the running for a semi final spot 2 rounds from the completion of the round robin stages.
3 out of 5 saffa teams were in the running for the semi-finals for the wooden spoon from week 6.
We dont have depth…sure….but what we have got is certainly performing better than what RSA has.

#9 Pietman:
I just picked a 22 man team on what I believe to be merit with a view to taking on the BL’S, so it is by no means exclusive. If Cobus Caldo hails from EP, Border or SWD he will definitely get the nod from me. Kabamba could edge one of the loosies on the bench- probably P3, but I wouldn’t touch Solly T with a bargepole. If my info is correct, he was recently chased away at Border too, after his problems at the Lions and Sharks. There are already some characters like Luke and Kokkerot in this squad who could cause negative vibes for different reasons, so we don’t need a guy with a proven track record as regards bad discipline and commitment to stink up the squad further before they have even played.
To be honest, I believe this team would definitely do better than the Northern team as announced last weekend. They would probably be a little short on old-hand experience, and at hooker they might battle with the throw-ins, but other than that they look very solid. Great, fast and skilled loosies, good line-out options with Wayne van Heerden and Potgieter complementing the locks, a good running flyhalf in Croy, with Stick at 12 a great kicking option at centre, and massive pace and skill out wide. The two wings might be small but they are like lightning and Kirchner is as stead as a rock with a good kicking game at the back.
They could speed up the game immensely and test the BL’s in that way. I believe that they will battle with a pacy game, and Alan Solomons has been around the block a couple of times so he’ll get the best out of these boys.

#23 Wallabie. – ‘Keo night owls’ Superbru S14 CHAMPION!!: I wasn’t knocking the Aussie teams. I just don’t think it is best for Aussie rugby to add another team. It is already diluted with 4 teams. South Africa is struggling with 5 teams ala the duo of cats.

Oneill is going to do it different this time…he was no invloved when aus was given perth.
But I hear, i may have it wrong, that they will recruit based on origin for the new franchise and add some marquee players to get started.
He said ARU is not going to finance the new team…it will be privatised.

Have to give you guys a chance.
20 May 2009, 17:54 pm
hey wallabie, i think the guys are literally just trying to say that you can tell south africa absolutely can’t seem to support the current five, let alone six … and are hoping australia don’t make the same mistake … i think for everybody in sanzar maintaining the quality of the competition is paramount to long term success.
dilute it too much and you’ll see that all of our national sides will pay the price for it.
