The Baby Boks ran out convincing 33-14 winners over the Boland Kavaliers in Wellington on Wednesday.
This was the final warm-up before the team departs for Japan for the Junior World Championships and the result pleased coach Eric Sauls. SA U20 outscored their more mature opponents, who will participate in the Currie Cup, by three tries to two.
Wing Clayton Blommetjies, flyhalf Francois Brummer and centre Nicolaas Hanekom crossed the line for the youngsters, while former Baby Boks Dewey Swartbooi and Luvo Sogidashe scored for the hosts. Sias Ebersohn, who was playing at fullback, added 18 points with the boot.
‘We tried different combinations against Boland and I am happy and satisfied with the performance of the boys,’ said Sauls. ‘We scored three tries against a Boland side that will be competing in the Currie Cup.’
‘The guys were very good on defence and attack. Our intentions are to play a brand of 15-man rugby and after today I am confident of our chances at the tournament. There are still a few playing options we have, but overall I am confident of our chances in Japan.’
The team departs on 31 May where they will face Fiji in their first match on 5 June.
