If a ref is poor he is poor to both sides, so do not come and single out a few one-eyed incidents that went Paarl's way as the norm of the game. There were just as many bad calls going to Rondebosch. You can ask a former Bok coach who was in the stands with us about his views. Your whining about the ref is typical of a bad sportsman. You would rather look for excuses than give credit to the opposition. Your name-calling of boys is totally uncalled for and does not belong on a forum like this as well. I guess you have seen the Paarl Boys No 10 play in all his previous 13 matches, so you are an expert on his abilities. If the only comments you can leave are critisism on the boys playing the games for their schools, please find something else to keep you busy.

There is no need to get so personal . Good luck however for your Bishops team on Saturday and perhaps you should already start thinking what you will be calling some of the non performancers and what new excuses you will take take to the ref association after the beating you will receive.

All selection is very interesting. If you ask any school team coach he will tell you that there are at least 5 parents who think their son should be playing in any particular team. Multiply this by the number of schools in the Western Cape and you have an idea of why the picking of any Craven Week team is so contentious.
That said however the selectors could do with some outside help. I would propose using a Mr PdV as he seems to have an eye for emerging talent. Maybe he could select the Rose amongst the thorns at schoolboy level.

Western Cape Craven Week selection is a very interesting topic. Over the fast few years there has been increasing criticism of selectors for picking too many 'paarl' players and not enough Southern suburb schools players. I agree with these setiments in some instances but often I can understand some of their reasoning. Not for a long time has a Southern suburb side been far superior than any of the paarl schools (Bishops side of 06 was prob the only time) and consistently beat them. The gap between the north and south so to speak has definitly been closed these days but you can understanf selectors picking the core of their side from the strongests side in the Cape which is usually a Paarl school. Last year for instance P Gym was a fantastic side and therefore the large majority of the players came from them.
Having said this, there have been cases in recent past where outstanding players from southern suburb schools have been left out. I hate to refer to Bishops boys all the time but being an Old Boy thats were the bulk of my knowledge lies; Kritzinger in 06 and Loizedes in 08 were 2 of the best backs I have seen at schoolboy level with bright futures. both were ignored unbelieveably and as far as I know both have now pursued options in a different sport. I just hope that by being slightly bias and not considering all options we arn't losing great young talent. A player like Chad matthews should stand a great chance as should Wynberg's Goss.
I really hope they get the side right this year. It should feature more players from the south than normal but we must understand the Paarl schools produce brilliant sides year in year out and deserve their players to be rewarded. I just hope the balance is done right....

Highlander hw can you right sam off after watching one game. This is his second year at fly half and was instremental in most of bishop's victories last year. The only reason he didn't look great against Wynberg is because he was injured. You should have noticed he only took the ball up himself once in that game. He is a shoo in for the no. 10 jersey

I am an impartial rugby supporter, thought that the ref had a shocker. That 10 of Paarl Boy Gavin Hopeless the way he kicked-missed 15 points, he got one hard tackle and that was that.Read the comment submitted- Rondebosch near the daeth hacked the ball up field and the Paarl Boys 15 was holding on so tightly it was embarrasing-that was in front of me. As a refs assesor i feel i have the necessary knowledge to know whats right and wrong-after the third high tackle-no card-poor officiating.I dont care if your side have not played a game in 3 weeks-thats not my problem. Also, get a proper size rugby field in Paarl before you point fingers-that patch what you call a field is laughable.

I watched the Paul Roos vs Bishops game on Saturday and as a Paul Roos supporter was shocked by the ref's handling of the game. Bishops have good reason to be unhappy. PRG do have many injuries at the moment, both locks, the hooker, scrumhalf and center were not able to play. Two are key players and both WP craven week players. Bishops played a great game and deserved to win.

Take your glasses off my friend and give credit were credit is due. Paarl have not played a game in 3 weeks and looked rusty, the flyhalf was never rattled, he had a poor kicking game but they still won. I love it when guys like Benigma etc already decided that Bishops is No 1 in the Cape. You still have to play us and the season is far from over. Pity the Paarl Boys vs Wynberg match got rained out.

There is very little to chose between the top 8 schools in the W.Cape. Any side can topple any one any ant Saturday. That is how close the league is. RBHS should have beaten Paarl Boys if not for some inept refereeing. Wynberg look a good outfit and Bishops look a competant side. The Paarl?boland schools will always be strong. What amazes me is the WP Cravenweek selection. I swear that some of the selectors need guide dogs. Gavin Hauptfliesch has been touted along with Lane for the number 10 spot-both have had shockers under pressure these past 2 weekends. Hauptfleish is easy rattled and is Lane. Carr is a stand out along with the 2 Bosch loosies, Chad Mathews and Michael Aristedau, both who have been overlooked by the selectors. It makes a mockery of when i played carvenweek in the mid 90's.The best players made the side no matter what school you went to, also after 7 trails WP are down to the final 2 rounds-heck even EP have selected their Cravenweek side 2 weeks ago.

For me i think that the Cape league is by far the strongest in the country-we need a home and away fixture against all the top 8 schools, now that would be interesting.............................

I am not saying that Lane is not a good player. I watched him last year and while he wasn't as good as the Bishops centre he still was one of the best in the team. The Bishops 12 on Saturday did benefit big time from his passes but the recent hype around his performances are unwaranted I felt and some of the other players were being overlooked who I felt played better than him. He is injured- so that is well noted and understandable.
Bishops vs. Wynberg will be the one to watch. Wynberg did lose to Grey PE who Bishops beat so will be enthralling match...

Enjoy_IT - Fully agree with most of what you've said.

2006 said, was a dream side with many stars that this side doesn't have...they are boxing above their weight at the moment and you've got to give them credit for that. They're playing as a team and are VERY commited (only lapse being against Wynberg).

Sam has being playing with an injury the past two games, so can't compare his performances against Paul Roos and Wynberg, with previous matches this season - unfortunately now it appears he has aggravated it badly and may miss Paarl Boys this weekend. Secondly did you watch most of the breaks against Paul Roos. They were all mostly setup by his passing!! Paul Roos number 10 was nowhere, the only other number 10 I've seen that's played better than him on the day - was Goss from Wynberg.

Wynberg still have to play Bishops on the Piley on the 25th July - I would say it comes down to that game who is the best in the Cape. Bishops are the best at the moment (based on stats/results) with still a couple of games to go.

With regards to a lot of the comments above. I have watched quite a large amount of Western Cape school rugby over the last five years or so and this year in particular I have seen quite a significant deteriotion of the standard in the Western cape.
I watched Paul Roos early in the year and thought they looked really sharp and exciting but then went to their match on the weekend and was bitterly disappointed. While they did have key players out who were far more important to them then the Bishops players out 'benigma' i think you know that ( in particular their 9 and 13 who I am sure we will see in the SA schools side) they never looked like threatening. Bishops were better than last week but they have definitly lost some of their spark from years gone by.
Cohen and Carr were standouts while lane continues to unimpress me this year despite regular remarks about his play. Last week after a big hit from the Wynberg wing he sat in the pocket and kicked poorly refusing to take it to the line while against paul roos he had no massive impact. Carr is an unbelievable player and has a big future. watch that name...
This side does not come close to 2006 though despite stats. They just do not have the same personal in the backline.
Wynberg have been brilliant and I am ecstatic for them. Played Bishops off the park and the followed that up with a good win against Gym.
STill keen to see who really is the best in the Cape. For me its Wynberg at the moment.

While they did have key players out who were far more important to them then the Bishops players out ‘benigma’ i think you know that ( in particular their 9 and 13 who I am sure we will see in the SA schools side) they never looked like threatening. Bishops were better than last week but they have definitly lost some of their spark from years gone by.
Cohen and Carr were standouts while lane continues to unimpress me this year despite regular remarks about his play. Last week after a big hit from the Wynberg wing he sat in the pocket and kicked poorly refusing to take it to the line while against paul roos he had no massive impact.
hey thanks for teh Kind words Charles and good luck to Bellville this season..
Its a pity about the refs in Cape town..I am a ref here in the Arabian Gulf and the standard believe it or not is very high..

if that penalty count 42-7 as mentioned in teh Bishops game is correct then surely something urgently needs to be done?
Surely some kind of assesment is being done in the WP?

#9 sharkiedubai: Wynberg is a top quality side! I coach at Bellville High ( the second team ) and Wynberg destroyed our first team. It was no surprise to me that they beat Bishops. I have to say though that Paarl Gym has lost a number of matches these season - the Wynberg win is therefore no surprise: I'm not taking anything away from Wynberg - like I said: a top quality side with no weaknesses!!
On refs: It is a pity that the standard of refereeing is so bad in the school leagues! Some guys complain about the standard of refs in the 1st league ( they are appointed by the WP Rugby Union ) but the refs in the second league are generally speaking also quite poor. It frustrates the coaches so much: spare a thought for the players as well - sometimes they just don't understand the interpretations of the refs and if they dare ask, they get penalized! What concerns me the most , is that most of these guys ref in their WP referee shirts: I sometimes wonder how some of them quialified!!
I have to admit though taht the ref in the Wynberg match of our second team was quite good: unfortunately I don't know his name.
Enjoy Wynberg for the rest of the season - I don't know when they'll be able to have such a good side again.

Got that 2006 game guys no problem and can post it on the net for old the old PRG guys to weep! Watching the video again, Bishops were the better side and had a dream 2006. PRG keep bringing back the 2006 game, but it wasn't even a close call, the guy was tackled out. Shows the PRG wing getting smoked out. The touch judge shrugs, not too sure, the ref NODS out and the touch judge raises his flag. All the PRG boys on the field go "Ahhhh, biased decision!" - the referee made the decision! Boneheads.

Fact is guys, 3 times in a row in your own backyard, no 'iffy' decisions there! We're coming back in 2011 and if we win that - then its a full decade where PRG hasn't seen a HOME WIN AGAINST BISHOPS! LOL!

Dorlingssj - We weren't killing the ball, we were turning the ball over and trying to compete and his interpretation was terrible. Sure some rucks we were guilty perhaps, but so was Paul Roos. Its all on video - he doesn't penalize them. Its fine if he has his 'own' interpretation, but he has to be consistent, can't blow Bishops and not PRG.

Even the PRG coach in the after match drinks was a bit baffled by some of the calls...
