Narrow wins for Landbou, Selborne
13 Jun 2009
Paarl Boys’ suffered a shock 24-19 loss at the hands of Boland Landbou on Friday, while Selborne staged a dramatic second-half comeback to beat arch-rivals St Andrew’s 28-25 in East London on Saturday.
It was only Paarl Boys’ third loss of the season, coming after defeats to Grey College and Affies.
As anticipated, it was a kicking dual that decided the outcome. Boland Landbou flyhalf Tiaan Radyn was his side’s hero, scoring 23 points via a try, five penalties and a drop goal. Radyn outshone opposite number Gavin Haupfleisch with superb tactical kicking that kept Paarl Boys’ in their own half for much of the game. However, Haupfleisch did score 14 points with the boot, while a penalty try was awarded to his side by Test referee Jonathan Kaplan.
Paarl Boys’ lock Johan van der Sluys was the stand-out forward.
Paarl Boys’ coach Elmo Wolfaard was disappointed with the result as it is their first loss of season to Cape opposition, although his progress was hampered by lack of preparation due to a number of his players being involved in the Craven Week set-up.
Also in the Western Cape, Wynberg hammered Strand 39-5 on Friday and Bishops annihilated Brackenfell 58-7 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Selborne trailed 20-0 at the break against St Andrew’s, but a colossal team effort saw them claim a dramatic three-point victory.
