Grey PE and SACS claimed thrilling late wins against Wynberg and Dale respectively at the Cape Schools Rugby Week on Monday.
Wynberg have only themselves to blame for losing 14-11. Twice in the last five minutes they were awarded a kickable penalty with the scores locked at 11-11 and twice they kicked for touch, set up a lineout and then lost the ball. The second botched lineout cost them the game as Grey raced 80m up field and were awarded a penalty which flyhalf Luke Daniels duly slotted.
In another exciting finish, SACS snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Dale. The hosts, trailing 12-11 with time up, were awarded a penalty, which went wide and all Dale had to do was dot the ball dead and the game was over. However, a Dale player let the ball bounce and wide-awake centre Godfrey Tundube followed up and scored to give his side an 18-12 win.
In other games on Wednesday, Paarl Gym thrashed Muir College 69-9, and Boland Landbou scored four tries to beat Queen’s 22-5. Scrumhalf Neil Tredoux controlled the game well for the Bolanders while prop Allan Dell was impressive at the set-pieces for the Queenians.
Rondebosch surprised Selborne 15-8 thanks to five penalties from Scott van Breda.
