Upset wins for Selborne, Queen’s
1 Jul 2009
There were victories for Selborne, Paarl Gym, Dale, Rondebosch and Queen’s in the last round of matches at the Cape Schools Rugby Week on Wednesday.
In the early game, Boland Landbou went in as favourites against Selborne after winning their first two games convincingly. However, the Eastern Cape side caused a big upset when they beat their more fancied opponents 25-16.
Paarl Gym vs Grey High was the biggest game of the day as both schools were undefeated at the Week and playing good rugby.
Gimmies flyhalf Lance Ruthford’s boot was again influential and he scored nine points – via two penalties and a drop goal – in a tightly contested game. Eventually wing Luqmaan Ishmail’s try was enough to take the game away from Grey High, as the Paarl side won 14-3.
Outside centre Christopher Bosch was Paarl Gym’s stand-out peformer, putting his body on the line throughout the game in an excellent defensive display.
Meanwhile, Rondebosch scored seven tries as they overpowered Muir 39-8, with Nick Walter and Michael Aristedeau each getting a brace for the Cape Town team.
Dale saved some face as they beat Wynberg 40-26 in a highly entertaining game. After losing both of their previous matches, the Eastern Cape school came back with an impressive performance, scoring six tries. No 8 Lubaboo Mtembu was the man of the moment scoring a hat-trick.
Wynberg’s eighthman Grant Edeades scored a brace and flanker Josh Katzen and centre Ashbey Williams each got one.
In the final match of the day, there was another upset as Queen’s beat hosts SACS 21-12.
The Eastern Cape side controlled much of the first half and scored two tries through scrumhalf Sisonke Ntsabo and wing Leon Makiwane to make it 12-0 at the break.
SACS came back with a more determined and improved performance in the second half as No 8 Matthew Mellville scored a brace for his team. But it was Queen’s fullback Athi Gxotiwe’s boot that took the game beyond the home side’s reach. Gxotiwe kicked three penalities to bring Queen’s their first victory of the Week.
