From Selborne to the Lions
7 Jul 2009
Former Selborne headboy Allan Miles has begun his stint as coaching co-ordinator with the Golden Lions.
Miles was offered the job two weeks ago by Jake White, whose Winning Way company recently did an audit on the Jo’burg-based union.
‘It was definitely out of the blue,’ the accounting teacher told the Daily Dispatch‘s Dominic Peel. ‘It happened very quickly and the offer was too good to turn down. Rugby is my passion and if I can make it a full-time career that would be great.’
While Miles, who had coached Selborne’s U15A side since 2007, couldn’t get unpaid leave, the school has assured him that there is a ’90% chance’ of them finding a place for him if he returns.
‘I’d like to thank all at Selborne for their support and for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious school,’ he said. ‘I’ve always dreamt of coaching the Selborne first team but you never know …’
Miles has a two-month contract with the Lions (that will be reviewed) and his responsibilities will include coordinating the training schedules for the team’s Currie Cup campaign, ensuring all departments have enough time to achieve their respective team targets, ensuring that all sessions are well planned and prepared (field, equipment etc) as well as making sure that coaching staff are punctual and the players are in attendance.

Good job buddy. Even as a 1st XV prop he had a broader view of the game than others. Something missing at the Lions, perhaps…

OK good, things are happening at the Lions. I’d really like to see them take a long term view once the structures are in place. For example…win the Currie Cup 3 times in the next 10 years. Produce Springboks. Get rid of players with plant names. End in the top half of the Super 14 with a view of at least being in the final in 5 years time. that sort of thing.
GO LIONS!!!!!!!

Well done Allan. If you do go back to Selborne, maybe Mr Gunn will finally let you take the reins of the First XV

. I agree with you. Also to have performance contracts, like having a 65% win ratio in the first year and work up to 80-85% in subsequent years.
Who in the Lions has a plant name? OK, there I was thinking of nick names, not real names

There are miles of Miles’s in the Eastern Cape… Here’s hoping this one makes good…
Best of luck…

maybe now they’ll stop playing the schoolboy rugby that they have been doing for the past 10 years, seeing they have all the school teachers in charge…

what is it with ex schoolmasters and current ones?
a low eq perhaps that leads them to the profession and to associate with each other?
the bok “protest” over bakkies was very schoolboyish in its implementation – too much schoolmaster influence over recent years?
