Pivot pain for Sharks
22 Jul 2009
Sharks flyhalf Guy Cronje has been found guilty of a dangerous tackle and suspended for a week.
Cronje was cited for a tackle in which he lifted a Boland player off the ground, tipped him sideways and then released him, after their match on Saturday.
He earned a yellow card for the tackle, but citing commissioner Edwin van Wyngaardt felt the offence deserved sterner punishment.
On Wednesday, judicial officer Dekker Govender slapped the 19-year-old with a ban that rules him out of the Currie Cup match against the Bulls at King’s Park on Friday.
The Sharks will now start with Monty Dumond at pivot. They were hoping to have Argentina star Juan Martin Hernandez available, but his arrival has been delayed because of red tape surrounding a work permit.
He is, however, likely to arrive in Durban late this week and should start against the Cheetahs next week.

there have actually been some tough flyhalves over the last decade or so, Honiball, Wilkinson, James, Hernandez spring to mind.
It is true to say most of them aren’t the most abrasive however.

#4 Big Hit: * ‘them’ being flyhalves generally

I am a Sharks fan, and was pretty sure that the Bulls would win anyway. Now with Dumond at 10, I predict a Bulls win by 20.
22 Jul 2009, 19:05 pm
What happened? He didn’t put a pillow down for the guy’s landing? Will the boks demonstrate against this like they did for Bakkies?
As David rightly points out, a FH is supposed to support the weight of a lock?

I don’t think you understand the physical abuse that gets directed at flyhalves by the thugs (opposition players only) in the pack. Being hard or tough as a 10 only means that you get up again.

I wasn’t really referring to the guys inability to support the lock. Just the fact that he managed to do it to him in the first place. Sh*t, I hope it wasn’t an accident.

Boo!!!!! Another triumph for the officials sitting in their airconed offices. We want to see rugby, you fools! Not players sidelined! Find a better way of ensuring no foul play occurs! Rugby is going to the dogs and the officials are leading the way!

A flyhalf spear tackling a lock is not foul play. It’s retribution.

#11 David: should be awarded the Honoris Crux for bravery!!LOL

I see, as an ex flyhalf yourself, you understand the blow for truth and freedom that his act represents.

Ag, Pity Hernandez wont arrive for the game on Friday.
Anyhow go Sharks.

Dekker Govender continues to be a fair dinkum *****. What does that toss know about rugby. Stick to Bunny Chows and backhanders.

Can I ask again why the Sharks are not playing Len Olivier? He was awesome at the Valke, and looked like he could develop into a good player. But like a lot of other guys who ended up at the Sharks they are buggering up his career.

#16 vanStraaten: he’ll be on the bench this week

Dekker Govender is that buddy of Hoskins who suspended JP Nel. The Sharks thought the move would clear the way for them to Super14 glory. Well, you all know the ending.
A one week suspension is an incentive for a spear tackler. Once a Shark always a shark.

long yellow.
meaning what?
22 Jul 2009, 23:53 pm
I think you are lost in your own translation. It is Lang Giel and not Lang Geel! Must admit it took me a long time to work that one out.

haha sorry for that.
need new glasses

From the little that I have seen of him he is no great loss.

#18 Lang Giel: What a **** statement! Especially from a Bull supporter
And just to bring your uninformed self up to date, the Sharks DID NOT cite Nel, and Stefan Terreblanche, who was the one “dangerously” takled by Nel, actually went to the Nel’s hearing to testify on Nel’s behalf! Not an action associated with a team that is trying to get rid of a player! The saying goes “give a dog a bad name and hang him” it was Nel’s reputation which got him! Any way to expect a Bulls’ fan to see with both eyes is like asking a cyclop to grow another eye

#18 Lang Giel: We should hire Umaga and Mealamu to spear tackle Govender down a flight of steel stairs

#6 BULLET: Unfortunately I can’t see it go any other way either…

#24 Atreides: Govender is a useless, NZ & Oz favouring dipsh!t!
Look at his ruling regarding Sheehan on Barrit!

To SharksGirl [23]
I only mentioned Govender and Hoskins in my comment. Just for the record: John Robbie on 702 stated that he could see nothing wrong with the tackle.
I agree with King Shark. The tackle on Barrit was totally illegal. WWE style. Govender is a fool who’s got no clue what the game is all about.
Good luck for this evening’s showdown. I expect the Sharks to win but as you correctly pointed out: I support the Bulls.
Have your say
