Big guns boost Bulls

Pedrie Wannenberg and Deon Stegmann make a comeback to the Bulls’ bench, while Gerrit-Jan van Velze is in the run-on side for their match against Boland on Friday.

Wannenberg (lung) and Stegmann (ankle) haven’t played since the Super 14 final in May, and coach Frans Ludeke has opted to introduce them gradually, while Van Velze gets his opportunity because of Dewald Potgieter’s four week lay-off with a fractured wrist.

‘I would like to use them [Wannenberg and Stegmann] as impact players and it was part of their rehabilitation plan that they will be on the bench, but I would like to stress that Gerrit-Jan thoroughly deserves his place in the run-on team after a splendid display against the Sharks,’ Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said.

A groin injury sustained prior to their last match against the Sharks has kept scrumhalf Francois Hougaard sidelined. Ruan Snyman will therefore cover Heini Adams. Flyhalf Burton Francis plays from the bench after being cleared of foul play at a disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, and is joined by Stephan Dippenaar, who can cover centre or wing.
