Paarl Boys’ High broke their five-year drought against Paarl Gym with a 24-12 win on Saturday, while Grey College shut out Grey High 16-0.
In Paarl, Boys’ High flyhalf Gavin Hauptfleish opened the scoring with a neatly taken drop goal, which he followed up with a well-timed penalty.
Boishaai left wing Curt Ruiters produced the moment of the match in the 15th minute, when he received a pass behind him on his own 10m line. He set off on a jinxing run before swerving inside out to dot down in the corner, leaving a trail of Paarl Gym defenders in his wake. Hauptfleish added the conversion to make it 13-0.
Gimmies eventually got on the score board through a drop goal from SA Schools flyhalf William van Wyk. After the teams exchanged penalties, flanker Henlo Weber had a moment of madness when he tip-tackled one of the Boishaai players. Referee Joey Salmans, who policed the game well, was lenient on Weber and only gave him a yellow card. However, Paarl Boys’ scored eight points during the 10 minutes that he was in the sin bin.
Ten minutes before half-time a missed touch kick from Van Wyk saw Boishaai retain possession and set up numerous phases before livewire centre Jan de Wet went on a weaving run and produced a superb back flick to left wing Lucien Cupido who dived over in the corner. The conversion was missed.
Van Wyk added two more penalties to make it 21-12 at half-time.
The second half deteriorated into a scrappy affair. Hauptfleish added another drop goal shortly after the break which was the final scoring act of the game.
Boishaai controlled possession and scrumhalf Dylon Siegelaar’s clever tactical kicking kept Gimmies pinned in their territory for most of the second half. WP Craven Week lock Wilhelm van der Sluys pilfered the Gym lineout ball at will, while openside flanker Jaycee Jooste was brilliant on the ground. For Gym, fullback Kyle Wilkinson showed a willingness to attack but his efforts were in vain.
Van Wyk was outplayed by his opposite number and he crumbled under the pressure in the last 20 minutes with elementary errors that cost his side dearly.
‘We have waited five long years to beat our arch-rivals and we have shaken the monkey off our backs,’ Paarl Boys’ coach Elmo Wolfaard told keo.co.za. ‘It’s a wonderful feeling and all the credit to the boys. The effort today was immense and it showed in the result.’
Captain of Paarl Boys’, Frans Malherbe, was ‘overjoyed’ with result and proud of his ‘resilient players’.
Carel du Plessis, former Springbok wing and Paarl Boys’ old boy said, ‘It was a great game. We controlled the first half well and were tactically better on the day.’
In another big derby game, Grey College maintained their unbeaten record this season when they beat Grey High 16-0.
The home side’s points came from a try by brilliant fullback Riaan Britz, with flyhalf Johan Goosen kicking a conversion and three penalties. Siya Mangalisa was outstanding for the visitors.
Meanwhile, Marlow Agricultural defeated Oakdale 19-10, Bishops lost 22-20 to Drostdy and Brackenfell drew 30-30 with Rondebosch. The game between Boland Landbou and Paul Roos was called off due to swine flu.
