North Harbour shocked Canterbury 22-19 in Albany with Dan Carter failing to impress.
Carter proved his fitness in club rugby last weekend but still looked rusty in this New Zealand Cup fixture.
Stuff.co.nz’s Marc Hinton reports that Carter came through 64 minutes’ work, if not impressively, certainly solidly.
He slotted five of his six shots at goal and even landed one long-range attempt from near halfway.
According to Hinton, it was a mixed bag of a night out of hand for the No 10. He kicked a lot, but much of it was off the mark. He also made one bad handling error midway through the second half, grassing a fairly regulation reception that may have hastened his replacement in the 64th minute.
‘It was good. I really enjoyed it out there,’ Carter told Sky TV afterwards. ‘They were tough conditions, and it was tough going at times, but just to be back playing was awesome.
‘I’ve got no qualms with the Achilles either playing or training – and that’s the main thing.’
