Muir College hosts Super 7s
11 Aug 2009
A sevens tournament will take place at Muir College Boys’ High in Uitenhage on 28 and 29 August.
Muir is steep in tradition and was founded in 1822. One of their most recent Springboks is Garth Wright and some of their current provincial players include Michael Killian (Lions) and Darron Nel (Cheetahs).
The sevens tournament has attracted a number of local schools in the U13, U15 and U19 age groups and has also afforded the previously disadvantaged schools in the region the chance to play against opposition they would normally not face.
The format will be similar to the IRB Sevens series, with the top three teams in each age group receiving prizes.
Present participating schools include: Grey, Gill College, John Walton, Molly Blackburn, Linkside, McCarthy, Uitenhage High, Solomon Mahlangu, Charlo, Seagull, CW Hendricks, Depatch Primary, Dalrose, Caritas and Uitenhage Primary schools.
The main contributors to the tournament thus far are as follows: Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, SA Rugby magazine (HSM), FNB Uitenhage, Brocketts Sports, Eagle Workwear, Lanford’s Superette, EH van Der Linde Brokers, Ruben Gillson.
Without the above contributors, it would not have been possible to host schools from the broader Uitenhage communities.
The two days promise to build friendships, promote sevens rugby in the region, promote sponsors and provide spectators with competitive, exciting, fast running rugby.
