Grey flex their muscles
15 Aug 2009
Grey College thrashed Glenwood 62-3 in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
Grey, who are ranked No 1 in the country this year and have not lost at home since 2006, were expected to be given a tough time by No 2 ranked Glenwood. However, it was one way traffic, as the Green Machine fell apart.
In Gauteng, Waterkloof and Monument qualified for the final of the Beeld Trophy (macro schools) with semi-final wins against Rustenburg (27-7) and EG Jansen (48-13) respectively.
In the Western Cape, Bishops got back to winning ways with a 27-0 drubbing over a flu-depleted SACS outfit that included five tries. The visitors led 12-0 at the break with tries through lock Williem Gresse and Dillyn Leyds. SA U18 flanker Nizaam Carr, so often the catalyst in galvanising Bishops, once again led the way with a powerful display.
Bishops camped on SACS’ goal line for most of the match and the score could have been greater were it not for some resolute defence. Meanwhile, Wynberg defeated Rondebosch 16-12 in a tight affair that could never get going due to some pedantic refereeing. Wynberg outscored the hosts by two tries to nil, through impressive Craven Week winger Zingisa Ndiki.
Wynberg flyhalf Kieran Goss was rattled in the first half, but changed tactics by plugging the corners with intelligent kicking, which paid dividends for the visitors. Goss controlled matters with the boot which ultimately proved the deciding factor in a scrappy encounter.
Wynberg lock Russell Steyn turned in a stellar performance at line-out time and was a Trojan in the loose, which enabled his side to come away with the spoils. For the hosts, fullback Scott van Breda continued his good season by bagging 12 points and looked dangerous with the limited ball he received.
Tygerberg continued their giant-killing season when they accounted for Paarl Gym 12-10 after trailing 6-10 at the break. Once again flyhalf Adri Claasen played the starring role, booting his side to victory with four well-struck penalties to inflict another defeat on Gimmies this season.
In Worcester, Paarl Boys’ had to dig deep to secure the accolade of being the top ranked side in the Western Cape with a hard fought 23-10 victory over a determined Drostdy. Boishaai pivot Gavin Hauptfleish kicked three penalties and two conversions for a personal haul of 15 points.
Marlow Agricultural suffered a rare 35-27 defeat to Outeniqua in George.

I suppose it cannot be fair when FS Schools play in the schools competition

So, why does Glenwood go to the Sanix tournament as the so-called “champion” SA team then? Sanix is a farce.

Damn but Grey College are good.
It boggles the mind, really.
Seems to me that it’s only Affies who can put up a half decent fight against this superteam, but even they only manage to beat Grey about 1 time in 5 or so.

How do you score only 2 points?

#2 TheTackler: Because plonkers like the self-proclaimed ‘Legend in his own bathtub’ John ‘Touch Me’ Allan went to Glenwood.

#7 Loosehead: please, we’d play them in the U21 first, and they would all go to the Academy and get degrees in Marketing or sport Psychology. Nothing wrong with that!

Obviously far superior coaches in Grey. Jeez Glenwood must be shellshocked still.

#4 Dantalian:
They got the conversion over, but the ref was Willie Roos and he forgot to award the try..LOL

Gareth, small correction – Grey have not lost AT ALL since August 06. Never mind losing at home
The unbeaten run continuous. To think that a team can go three years without losing. Before this amazing run, Grey had another 80 game unbeaten run.
This weekend the toughest of them all. Paul Roos in Stellies. Should be a monster. Only worry is that the SA Schools side is also due to play that day – and Grey has 6 players in that side.
Lets hope the two sides can tackle each other at full strength.

#2 TheTackler: I speak under correction, but NZ also dont send their best side? I have seen Christchurch Boys or Auckland Grammar there in ages?
Am i correct in my assumption? If i remember correctly, a school from Hamilton was there this year?
Agree Sanix is a farce.

Well done Grey
The second best team in the country is the cherries(grey second 15)

#13 Cheetha Champs: No, NZ don’t send their champion team to Sanix either. Just also-rans with a bit of rich-daddy money to fly to Japan.
