Last Saturday’s soccer fixture resulted in significant damage to Newlands Rugby Stadium, according to WP Rugby.
Newlands hosted the MTN8 semi-final between Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs, a fixture organised and controlled by the Premier Soccer League. WP Rugby, who rented Newlands to the PSL, has issued a statement blaming the football organisation for damages done to the stadium.
‘WP Rugby was not the event organiser, or manager,’ the statement read. ‘The event, as a Cup Fixture, was run under the auspices of the PSL. Eventing, including all security arrangements, were under the auspices and control of the PSL.
‘Significant material damage was caused to Newlands Rugby Stadium by an unruly element in the crowd. The extent of the damage is currently being assessed.’
WP Rugby will meet with Ajax on Tuesday morning to review the incident and damage to Newlands.
