Schalk Burger is likely to wear the No 7 jersey next week with Juan Smith still battling an ankle injury.
Smith was unable to take full part in Friday’s training session and could be rested for the Springboks’ Test in Perth next Saturday. Available after serving an eight-week suspension, Burger could be the man to fill the void.
‘We will make a decision on whether Juan will play against Australia once we get to Perth on Tuesday,’ Bok coach Peter de Villiers told reporters.
Burger ran much of Friday’s session at blindside, with Heinrich Brussow playing at openside and Pierre Spies at No 8. This looks to be the starting combination for the Test against Australia unless Smith makes a dramatic recovery in the next few days.
