Taranaki trounce Wellington

Taranaki beat Wellington for the first time in 20 years when they edged Thursday’s contest 29-16 in New Plymouth.

Taranaki, the smaller of the two sides that comprise the Hurricanes in the Super 14, outscored the Lions by two tries to one. Flyhalf Willie Ripia kicked 19 points, goaling both conversions and five penalties.

The result continues Wellington’s slide down the New Zealand Cup table. They are presently sitting at fourth with matches on Friday and Saturday yet to be completed.

In another game played on Thursday, Counties Manukau clouted Northland 37-21.
