Hoffmann joins Sevens set-up
19 Oct 2009
Paul Treu has invited nine newcomers to the Springbok Sevens training camp including WP utility back Conrad Hoffmann.
Despite being the best scrumhalf prospect at WP, Hoffmann was shifted to flyhalf in 2009 with the aim of moulding him into a world-beating pivot. Unfortunately, he received few opportunities and was replaced by Aussie import Matt To’omua in the Currie Cup semi-finals.
Braam Gerber (Blue Bulls), Steven Hunt (Western Province U21), Trompie Nontshinga (Griquas), Chris Dry and Makholokoe Ramashala (Free State U21), Nhlanganiso Sibanda (Free State U19), Bernardo Botha (Lions U21) and Alshaun Bock (Hamilton Rugby Club) will join those already contracted by Saru.
Nontshinga will join the camp on Wednesday, while the rest of the newcomers underwent fitness and conditioning training at the Sports Science Institute at Newlands on Monday.
‘We will have on-field training on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at our base camp in Stellenbosch and on Saturday we will play a few warm up games at Brookside in Claremont,’ said Treu.
‘After this weekend, our next assignment will be the Middelburg Sevens (31 October) and the Singapore Cricket Club Sevens, where we are the defending champions.’

JC, i think you raise a subtle point here that irks me. Hoffman lost game time to an Aussie wannabe – To’omua. It is a disgrace that such a hugely talented player such as Hoffman has to play Sevens and Club rugby as some young Wallabie upstart is being given a shot.
Hoffman – come to Bloem ou pel – we have a spot or two open. Plus we play in finals….

#3 Cheetha Champs: You guys tried to sign him last year. He is in the mix and coming through the ranks. Im sure he’l get some game time in the Super 14. Lionel Cronje is also heading this way
And with all due respect man,you guys only contest play offs in one competition mate.If we were talking front rankers it would be another story. Im certain most developing promising young props would want to head for Bloem , Wp Nel’s rapid development is a sign of Os’s influence.
Hoffman is happy innie kaap jou aap

I think Trompie will be fantastic in this format and come back even better for the 15-man game in a similar way to guys like Juries and Gio.

This SA 7′s side are getting stronger all the time.
SA rugby is in a very good condition. The CC semiF was worth watching and the level of play fantastic, all looks good for the future!

#3 Cheetha Champs:
What is also not mentioned is that he was injured for most of last season and this season as well.
When he came back from injury he was very poor and didn’t deserve to play CC rugby at the time.
For goodness sake the guy was useless at VC level.
Hopefully he will get his form back playing Sevens!!!

#8 wpw: Fair enough. I do however seriously rate him as a 9. Rassie should leave him there.
Have your say
