Delport to lead Bok Sevens

Delport to lead Bok Sevens

Paul Treu has named Paul Delport as the Springbok Sevens captain for the 2009-10 season.

Delport will take over from Mzwandile Stick, who led the team to their first World Series title last season.

Treu believes the captaincy rotation will strengthen the leadership within the squad.

‘All the senior and contracted players in the squad fully endorse Paul as their captain for the season,” said the head coach. ‘We want to create a platform for all our players to excel as leaders. This is part of the legacy we want to build. In the future, there will be new captains and leaders who will take over from Paul, so it’s important to have many leaders in our setup.

‘The Bulls have proved to be successful thanks to their leaders such as Victor Matfield, Fourie du Preez and Bakkies Botha in their squad.’

While Delport will be the recognised skipper, Treu said everybody will have a role to play in the side.

‘Our mentality within the squad is that of a team and not individuals. While Paul has been named captain, our strength will continue to be based on a team effort. That’s what I am expecting,’ Treu said.

The Springbok Sevens kick off their World Series title defence on 4 December in the first tournament in Dubai.

Not sure if this is the right move. Thought Stick was a great leader last year.

Then I think Paul Treu is a really great coach. So he will know what he is doing.

Good luck to our 7′s for this new season. They made us really proud the last season.

I see JW Jonker is part of the Sevens squad.
So no S14 for him next year?

This probably means that S14 Cheetahs centres will consist of:

    Bosman
    Uys
    Ebershon
    Snyman
    Geel

    And wings:

    Nokwe
    Mapoe
    Basson
    Demas

Delport is a great player and I reckon he’d make a very good captain.

Well he’s always been seen as a future leader in senior rugby. Good on him to be the Sevens captain. I still wonder if what impact he’d had made in 15 man rugby had he been given a proper chance, and not had a line of bad luck

Yeah, he captained PdeVs u/21 Boks. I’m just surprised he hasn’t returned to the 15 man game. He’s probably having a lot more fun though in sevens.

Why the HELL is Demas not there !

OUR CHOICE FOR WING OF THE CURRIE CUP IS NOT THERE !

This is awful ! Demas should be in SA 15s – he is not ! Demas should be in 7′s then – he is not ! This is a scandal !

    9) Paul Delport (captain)
    10 ) Ruan Pienaar
    12) Morne Steyn
    13) Earl Rose

This was PDV’s selection for his under-21 team.
