SA leave Dubai empty-handed
5 Dec 2009
The Blitzboks suffered a 7-0 defeat against Australia in the plate final of the Dubai Sevens.
Paul Treu’s men disappointed as they produced stale performances in their defeats against Fiji in the Cup quarterfinals and against a young Australian outfit, but did well to earn a hard-fought victory against high-flying Kenya in the plate play-offs.
In the plate final, South Africa stole the early momentum with strong play up front which saw them create a couple of early scoring opportunities, but a solid defence from Australia kept the defending champions out.
This proved costly as the Australians went ahead 7-0 against the run of play after a good kick and chase, which proved to be the last action of the first half.
After the break, the match turned into physical encounter as both sides contested ferociously at the breakdown. Good work from Franki Horn and Kyle Brown saw South Africa have most of the possession in Australia’s half, but the Boks failed to capitalise.
With 30 seconds remaining, the Boks had a final opportunity to draw level with a scrum 25m out, but they lacked composure and a knock-on from MJ Mentz dashed their last hopes of going into extra-time.
Australia almost lost possession in the resulting scrum, but the Boks lost the ball forward again, ending the game.
Earlier in the day, the Blitzboks met Kenya in the plate semi-final. Rayno Benjamin, who’s been on a scoring spree in Dubai, scored the Boks’ first try after set piece move from a penalty tap 5m out. However, Kenya took the lead with a converted try right on the half-time mark.
In the second stanza, the Boks put themselves in front again. Good interplay and continuity saw Mzwandile Stick in for South Africa’s second touch down and added the extras to make it 12-7.
But again the Kenyans hit back as Colins Injera ran in the corner after stretching Boks’ defence. A good conversion saw them ahead.
Kenya were reduced to six players after ill-discipline at the breakdown. After constant pressure, the Boks finally scored the winning try as Stick kicked the ball across the field to Benjamin, who dived over to secure their place in the plate final with a 17-14 win.
Earlier in the Cup section, the Boks were eliminated in the quarterfinals with a 17-5 defeat against Fiji.
The defending champions started the game off strongly, working their way up the field through several set phases, displaying good physicality and composure, but a mistake from Mpho Mbiyozo prevented the Boks from finishing off.
Benjamin, however, opened the scoring moments later after Fiji lost the ball in their 22. Mentz secured possession at the breakdown and executed a good switch move with Paul Delport. The skipper then passed the ball to the unmarked Benjamin to score in the corner.
Ryder brought the Fijians level in the final minute of the first stanza with an effective chip and chase, sprinting past the Boks’ defence and diving on the ball unchallenged.
Shortly after the break, Fiji scored an early converted try to put pressure on the Boks as they found themselves behind with four minutes remaining.
Too many individual mistakes from the South Africans saw them restricted in their own half and allowed Fiji to dominate. The Pacific Islanders eventually sealed the game as they scored a last-minute try to eliminated the Boks.
Meanwhile, eight-time World Series champions New Zealand claimed the main prize with a 24-12 win against Samoa in the Cup final.
The World Series now continues in South Africa, where the next tournament will be held in George on 11 and 12 December.

5 Dec 2009, 09:36 am
Knocked out by a VERY GOOD Fiji.
Back to full strength (i.e stronger than last year)
William Ryder is back too. Nuff said. Best 7′s player on the planet

Fiji is our boggie side in 7s. We dont beat them very often at all. We really struggle to match them physically.
5 Dec 2009, 10:23 am
Nothing much happening here, I see.
5 Dec 2009, 10:25 am
Did they choke? After all, they are the reigning champs and they got bowled outin only the QFs?
5 Dec 2009, 10:25 am
7′s is not REAL rugby. Neither is rugby league
5 Dec 2009, 10:41 am
@Partizan:

I sometimes wonder whether he’s an embittered Kiwi ex SA resident whose ex wife and kids are still in SA. The were a number of Kiwis in Cape Town during the ’80s, in that position.

Shouldn’t send boys to do a mans job…
Sevens is still rugby, and unfortunately our Sevens side,bar one or two, is just filled with guys making up the numbers that would never truly cut it at 15 or super 14 level
Ya, come on now, tell me how great gio aplon is? It really is pathetic….
But our Schools Sevens is looking promising, however although in the end it may require a unique set of skill sets, these are skills which can be utlized in the 15 a side game, and Sevens should also be utilised as a development/feeder system.
On a side note, i am really enjoying the players grabbing the bok when they score…
Lastly, DAM SUPERSPORT FOR NOT SHOWING THE BARBARIANS GAME

What can I say… I’m devastated. I care so much for the 7s. I now know how the All Black fans felt in 2007. The pain of seeing our best and brightest (Benjamin) losing in the quarter finals, guys please. This hurts me so bad. How am I going to take my rage out? Will this lead to months of depression for me? (Like it did for many New Zealanders after 07)
I don’t know where to go from here.

I saw a snip-it of Invictus on the TV.
Matt Damon appears to do well playing Francois Pienaar.
No mention of food poisoning, or of the *****, Susan Dawn Von Dronkalaar.
5 Dec 2009, 12:51 pm
@cane:
Of course there was no mention of whores, otherwise the whole movie would have taken place in the ABs hotel rooms.
5 Dec 2009, 12:58 pm
@cane:
Oh, you mean that fictional character that was made up to ease the suffering and pain of one of your many world cup failures?
5 Dec 2009, 13:05 pm

very angry.
going for a walk.
5 Dec 2009, 13:36 pm
@Valkyrie:
That’ why they are rated better than the Bokke!
5 Dec 2009, 13:46 pm
@rangerman: 21 – Ranger, I feel the same mate. REALLY ANGRY that we are not getting this game. With so many saffas in that side and the captain being a saffa you would think the damn idiots at Dstv could be screening this BaaBaas game.
If there are new sat providers I would also switch over. Just don’t think that will happen. Dstv has the monopoly here and way up into Africa too and part of the middle east pick it Dstv. Bugger them. We pay enough for the rubbish most ot the channels they broadcast. I mostly only want Dstv for the news channels and sport.
We one of the big rugby countries in the world with NZ why the heck not screen this game? The last big rugby game of the year and we don’t get to see it.
5 Dec 2009, 13:50 pm
@Puma:
Just download the torrent when it comes out.
5 Dec 2009, 14:01 pm
@Kobus Kitty: Feel angry they are not showing this game.
5 Dec 2009, 14:27 pm
@Kobus Kitty: 24 Where do I get it? REALLY REALLY want to see that game. SuperSport focusing to much on the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Why? Second string golf really. We are facing the BaaBaas next year right? Do you think SuperSport can organize that for us? Hate this! Really!Was looking forward to see WP Nel and that MONSTER WALL of a centre pairing. Eish. Not a good Saturday 4 me.
5 Dec 2009, 14:43 pm

5 Dec 2009, 15:16 pm
