Russel played for SA and did well. He had his moments but ultimately couldn’t deliver consistent performances. That is what is required to stay at this level.

Apart from Russell, another great example is Pieter de Villiers, he couldn’t get a contract at provincial level in SA because he was told he was simply “too small to be a successful prop” and ended up playing 68 tests for France!

He would always look to go himself first before looking around and keep the ball too long before sending hospital passes.

I dont know if he has changed, but back then, he needed to look first, assess in an instant where the ball is going to be best used, and IF it is with him and there is a gap, THEN give it a go. Not give it a go every time and then pass when there is bugger all. He just ruins chances outside him.

I have been watching him play for Clermont this season and he looks sharp. Still has loads of pace, great awareness and great handling skills. His kicking game is not that bad and certainly better than some of the current incumbent Bok wingers (JP, Nokwe, etc). Additionally I don’t think the guy’s defence is actually that bad.

Still think he could be a great assest to the Bok setup but doubt he will ever get a look in again. Even if he retruns to SA.
