Sireli joins Fiji

Stormers back Sireli Naqelevuki will play for Fiji in the George Sevens this weekend.

Jerry Burotu and Niumaia Cakacaka were injured in Fiji’s Dubai campaign where they were knocked out by New Zealand in the semis, with Naqelevuki now drafted in. Sevens was the version where Naqelevuki first made an impact, and with his form waning in the XVs code recently, Rassie Erasmus will be hoping this could provide a platform for a return to his best.

Naqelevuki joined the Fiji squad in George on Monday, and they will face Australia, Portugal and Russia in Group B on Friday. South Africa, who were knocked out in the Cup quarter-finals to Fiji, are in a group with Kenya, France and Zimbabwe and will need to improve greatly if they are to challenge for honours on home soil.

I sure hope for the Stormer’s sake that he gets on the plane with them afterwards and never returns…

I think he will be very effective in 7s – takes at least two men to bring him down, will make space for the others. And he is deceptively fast also.

As for WP, why is no-one singling out the guys who gave away those 4 penalties in the first 20 minutes? They are just as guilty.

Agree,he was just the last unlucky guy who conceded that penalty…easy scapegoat

The year before joining WP and the Stormers Naqelevuki was the 7′s player of the series. He is brilliant at 7′s!

Yes he does add a lot in the 7′s game. It is very different to 15s.

He is a player in their side, or he was in the past at least, who would carry strongly and crash ball it up, and either offload in the tackle to a teammate or set up the next phase by taking out a couple of players at the ruck. Then the quicker players are released out wide.

Fiji have always had a few bigger players like that to fulfil that job.

Sireli is actually a great 7′s player. Not so great at 15s though

    Oh joy of joys!!
Please please please keep him!! Just know this: he’s gonna wash your cars, sit on your bench and lose the game for you in the semis.

not a fan of the guy,not just because of that tackle in the semis but just in general, i dont understand why WP got him in the 1st place
