Paul Treu believes the Blitzboks will produce an improved performance in George this weekend.

Last season, the Springboks Sevens were flying high as they claimed a Cup double at the Dubai and George Sevens. From there, they stayed on top of the log and went on to claim their maiden World Series title.

In the opening tournament of the 2009-10 season in Dubai, however, the Blitzboks disappointed in the knock-out stages as they were eliminated in the Cup quarterfinal against Fiji and lost 7-0 against Australia in the plate final after being undefeated on day one.

Treu said the team will look to deliver a better display in George as they aim to be more consistent.

‘We’ve worked very hard during the pre-season and our system has served us well in our last campaign,’ Treu told SA Rugby. ‘We are missing several regulars from the 2008-09 season, but that is no excuse. This squad is full of talent and we must quickly learn to play consistently well over two days.’

Treu added that he expects the home crowd to spur on the team.

‘The supporters were really fantastic last year and I am expecting the same on Friday and Saturday. Any team will tell you that nothing beats the feeling of playing in front of your own crowd,’ he said.

There have been two changes made to the squad as the Boks train in George this week.

Bulls U21 flyer Deon Helberg, who was recently involved in a plane accident at George airport, and veteran Marius Schoeman have been called-up to bolster the squad as Neil Powell is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

    If their consistent in George, it means they should lose in the quarters. . .

    If they do not perform in George and at least make finals i’m afraid their title ambitions will go down the tubes!!!!

    They demolished Australia on day one, only to be held scoreless by oz the next day….strange.

    SA should reach at least semis every time from now on to have any chance (and hope NZ and Fiji stumble). A win at home is of paramount importance.

    If the final on Saturday will be NZ vs Fiji, Blitzboks can kiss their chances goodbye already.
