Jean to play for Baa Baas
10 Dec 2009
Jean de Villiers will lineup for the Barbarians against Ireland on 4 June next year.
It will be the second time De Villiers runs out for the famous club, while Ireland will use the match at Munster and De Villiers’ home ground of Thomond Park as preparation for their tour of Australasia. De Villiers’ Munster team-mates Doug Howlett and Paul Warwick will also line up for the Baa Baas.
De Villiers will decide in February whether to extend his contract with the Irish club, but if he decides to return to South Africa he should be available for the Boks’ opening Test of 2010 against France on 12 June.

Jean’s just been dropped from Munster’s Heyneken Cup match for tomorrow night… Backline just not firing since his arival. I’d say Jean’s heading home in Feb.

Jean should take some time off, then come play for Stormers in March and get the captaincy back

If Jean comes back to WP, we might have the most dangerous backline in the S15.

I reckon he’s pulling in to the Sharks next season!!!

De Villiers has been pretty poor since he arrived at Munster. It doesn’t help that Munster didn’t need a 12 and O’Driscoll made him look stupid when Leinster beat them 30-0. They signed the wrong South African centre.

@SpringbokSarah: Hear Hear Sarah!
@Nanashi: I agree! Now if the forwards can just get the ball to that backline…
and NO ONE passes to Naquelevuki!
@Paddylock: Well glad to hear it! Please can you notify the Munster management, hopefully they will release him even earlier!
O’Driscoll usually makes people look stupid by running into them with his head so they stumble around a bit, and then makes himself look more stupid by concussing himself in the process.

o driscoll is a wingeing sore loser. I have lost respect for him after his 2 lions tours. Especially this recent tour. What a chop hey ……

In Ireland everythings green and frozen. Fark that, rather come home Jean!

O’Driscoll hasn’t lost many games for Leinster and Ireland this year in fairness to him. None for Ireland actually.
I’ve never really rated Jean de Villiers. Fourie is a class act, super super player. I couldn’t understand when I lived in South Africa how people made such a fuss over Jean, who is good but not great, and Fourie struggled to get his game.
For the record, O’Driscoll ran right around him once, Jean falling off yet another tackle and fixed him for another try.
Jean is not helped by being asked to play inside O’Gara though, it means he constantly has to worry about his inside shoulder defence.

@dr dre: I totally agree with you Dre. I used to rate him highly, but his behaviour in the Lions tests was shocking.
Him and Mike Philips, they probably cant watch the replays with out cringing.
@Paddylock: Some very good point Paddy-poo. I started to wonder about Jean in 2006/07 but since he took the Stormers captaincy and started actually stepping around players he has re-ignited his game.
Perhaps another accolade for PDiv’s approach?
Fourie is the best #13 in the world, you are right, he is absolute class.

The second-best 13 in the world. He can be seated at the right-hand of BOD though.

@Paddylock: I don’t rate either of them really, never understood the fuss either.
Have your say
