Rowdy Ryno axed
10 Dec 2009
Ryno Benjamin will not feature at the George Sevens because of disciplinary reasons.
Shaun Venter will take Benjamin’s place for the second leg of the IRB Sevens Series. The Blitzboks need to pick up points at this tournament if they’re to keep their hopes of a title defence alive. However, without their star attacking player, the task will be significantly tougher.
‘Ryno breached our team protocol and I had to make a difficult call. We are a closely knitted family and our team culture is very important to us,’ said coach Paul Treu. ‘It was not an easy call to make, especially so close to the tournament, but rules are rules and the healthy state of the team is more important than any individual.
‘I am very satisfied with the team’s preparations and the players are looking forward to playing in front of their home supporters.’

What did he do? Was Tiger in town?

This is not the first time disciplinary action was taken against Ryno Benjamin. He tends to put self interest ahead of team interest. In a team sport that does not work.

naughty ryno on the charge….I wonder if he has any australian in him…
10 Dec 2009, 15:29 pm
Stupid. Wasn’t Ryno the other player Earl Rose was bust with for dealing / smoking drugs?

Could anyone here enlighten me as far as the 7s seedings are concerned…
How do the three top 7s nations get to meet in the quarter and semi finals…?? Seems to me a bit of jiggery-pokery ensured that another side met the winner out of those three in the final… thereby given the others a chance…
in any seeded tournament the tops sides should meet as late as possible…
surely…???

@SABC: Italy came third in the 2009 European 7′s Championship, Russia beat France in the final.
In 2008 Ireland came 4th, they wanted to get back onto the circuit but they didn’t enter a team in 2009. A bit strange, they had some good 7′s players, not all were fully professional though.
10 Dec 2009, 19:10 pm
Good move Ryno! Now you can start partying like its 1999!

“Rose and Benjamin to appear in court
Tuesday, September 09 Print
Golden Lions
rugby players Earl Rose and Ryno Benjamin will appear in the Randburg magistrates court today on alleged drug dealing charges.
The two Lions players will appear in the dock alongside two other co-accused in charges relating to their arrest on 31 January of this year.
Rose and Benjamin were arrested in January after being found in a flat in Fontainebleau, Randburg which contained a significant amount of illegal substances.
The amount of drugs found in the flat has prompted the state to prosecute the players on intent to deal charges.
A Golden Lions representative claimed that the drugs had been “planted”.
“We are aware of the charges against them. But according to our own lawyers’ investigation into the case, the drugs were planted on the players,” GLRU chief executive Manie Reyneke told the Beeld newspaper on Monday.
“We are convinced the case against them won’t continue.” he said.
With thanks to the Beeld. “

Nasty Potheads

Looks like Jean de Villiers isn’t even good enough to make the run-on 15 for his Irish club, Munster. He’s on the bench.

@TheTackler:
And Richie was subbed at half time last week….ineffective!
11 Dec 2009, 07:29 am
@omanishark:
I think they share the same dealer.
11 Dec 2009, 08:42 am
apparently he is related to James Small….
11 Dec 2009, 09:18 am
He may be a bit of a pothead, but he is still responsible for one of the funniest things I have ever seen on a rugby field…remember that breakaway he had for the Lions with Phillip Burger in pursuit – he caught him three times in the length of the field, and was handed off three times! Hilarious!
11 Dec 2009, 09:29 am
@Kerneels:
Phillip Burger is still receiving counselling over that incident…
11 Dec 2009, 09:40 am
Ryno why? One of our best 7′s players. Without him it does not look good.
Everytime Ryno scored a try he would grab the Bok on his jersey and kiss it…..
Now there is a passionate player for you. Will really miss seeing him play at home. My favourite 7′s player too.
11 Dec 2009, 11:18 am
@Cyborg: Yes – all covered up
11 Dec 2009, 15:33 pm
Big decision to make. Well done Paul True

If we deal with players according to their skill on the playing field and not according to their actions then we are one step away from the culture of impunity found amongst the top football players. I don’t think rugby should go there.
Have your say
