A nation of champions

A nation of champions

South African rugby’s trophy cabinet has never been this full.

While the Boks finished the year on a disappointing note, it didn’t change the fact that in 2009 they added the Tri-Nations trophy, Lions series trophy, Freedom Cup and Mandela Plate to the Webb Ellis Cup that they won in 2007. The Bulls, of course, claimed the Super 14 title for the second time while the Springbok Sevens team finally got their hands on the World Series trophy.

To celebrate these achievements, SA Rugby magazine assembled all of the above silverware and took a unique cover photo that makes its new bumper 150-page edition a collector’s one.

Also in the new issue:

BekkerAndries Bekker on his injury nightmare, learning from Victor Matfield and why the Stormers are better off without Luke Watson

– Why selection and tactical blunders were to blame for the Springboks’ disastrous European trip

Jaque Fourie on shrugging off life’s disappointments, his contract dispute with the Lions, and mentoring Juan de Jongh at the Stormers

– Why the Southern Kings will only see Super Rugby if Saru makes some strong decisions and there is unity between the three provincial unions that make up the franchise

JeanOver a pint of Guinness, Munster centre Jean de Villiers talks about broadening his horizons, chirping Ronan O’Gara and his plans to return to South Africa in 2010

– A South African coach, South African businessman and a clutch of South African players have reversed the fortunes of Saracens

    We are well deserved Champs.

Has any other rugby nation held so many trophies at once?

Hahahaaaa just to remind you this was the first post off this thread, took a while to get to 1000 hey.

    Probably not. Well done!

I’ve got a request, when you have a double issue, please make it thicker… so it can last me longer than a day please, what am I supposed to read?

    oh ja, my text books

  • 1030.WP_: Reply to this comment

    Thanks.

Good luck for staging the next RWC Nils.

The pschcologist’s are going to have a field day after that!

It wont be pretty when the sequence stretches to 24 years!

  • 1031.WP_: Reply to this comment

Yes Sarah! Text books are wonderful, and ridiculously boring.

Are you in Matric next year?

  • 1032.Nils: Reply to this comment

    @WP_: Thanks, WP.

I’d rather say that psychologists will have their hands full earlier when someone will start giving away the huge amount of trophies they have amassed this year.

You know, it’s not easy to survive surrendering Sevens series, S14, 3 Nations and eventually WC. ;)

  • 1033.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

@WP_: no they’re just boring, that’s why I could only get through 1 of the 10 stories we are supposed to read.

Not yet, Grade 11, sheesh let’s not make me any older, the other day I was starting high school

  • 1034.Nils: Reply to this comment

@WP_: And have a great nd hapy next year, if we do not meet this year anymore here.

Of course, not at Kiwi teams expense. ;)

    Nils

Haha yeah, Tri Nations will be great and tightly contested as always next year. As it is supposed to be. Looking forward to it. Really cant wait for the S14 though mate, but not worry as the Stormers will bring home the trophy! ;)

Who do you support again? The Saders? Damn, it’ll probably be you’re buggers then.

Thanks mate. I hope you and you’re family have a great and prosperous new year too.

Catch you around for some great rugby next year.

    Sarah

Oh you’re not too old then. ;)
    Haha ya ya.

    Keep well youngster :)

  • 1037.Nils: Reply to this comment

@WP_: Yes, S14 and 3N will be humdingers – South Africa trying to prove their success was no fluke, New Zealand trying to wrestle shining trophies back and Australia trying to spoil everybody’s party (joking, Aussies are damn good if we take into consideration how meagre their resources are comparing to any other major rugby nation).

Can’t wait really. For me the main players probably will be Saders, Canes and Chiefs from NZ, Brumbies and Tahs from Aus and Bulls and Sharks from SA. Would like to see Stormers, too, in the mix, they are one of my favourite SA teams along with the Sharks.

You are dead right, I support Saders through thick and thin. Last year they made me especially happy – after losing so many big guns (Carter, Mauger, MacDonald, Hamilton etc. to the green pastures and King Richie for half a season) and after horrible start (1 win in the first 5 games) they made the semis leaving behind even high flying Sharks. That gritty win at the Tank (breaking Sharks unbeaten record at home since 2007) was the happiest moment for me. And – all things considered – they did very well against the Bulls in Pretoria, having them on the ropes in the 1st half. No shame losing to the best team in the tournament in the end, they did great even reaching the playoffs against all the odds. :)

    Cheers, friend!
