Cheetahs to bench Sias

Sias Ebersohn will not start at flyhalf for the Cheetahs in their first Super 14 warm-up match against Eastern Province next Saturday.

Many media reports expected Ebersohn or Griquas fullback Riaan Viljoen to spearhead the Cheetahs’ backline as incumbents Naas Olivier and Louis Strydom are recovering from knee injuries.

Cheetahs backline coach Hawies Fourie, however, has confirmed with this site that Tewis de Bruyn will start in the No 10 jersey.

‘Sias will not start against EP,’ Fourie told keo.co.za. ‘Naas and Louis are still out, so we have decided to select Tewis because he is our number one goal kicker at the moment.

‘Sias will come on off the bench later in the match and then we will probably shift Tewis to scrumhalf.’

Fourie has also confirmed that the Cheetahs have requested to cancel their warm-up match against Namibia.

‘It will be too much of a hassle to travel the guys up to Windhoek to face Nambia,’ he said. ‘We will probably just face our Vodacom Cup side instead.’

Sias and Robert Ebersohn should come to the Sharks and then their true potential will be realised. We desperately need an quality flyhalf. Just like we have turned former Cheetah players into superstars we will do the same for them.

    Naka should’ve kept Lionel Cronje . . . .

I’m hoping Sias and Robert Ebersohn get enough game time so that they can pencil their names down for the 2011 World Cup squad…

I’m hoping Wilton Pieterson and Robert can make the step up this year!

    @Gambit25: any news on Wilton’s recovery ?

@Pepe: Really? Hmmm… let’s see. Most of the old Free Staters became Boks before they went to the Sharks, before they were ruined, like Jannie, Jouba, Honniball etc.

Who’s left. Hmmm… Ruan and Bismark. Both went through all the structures and were great, but had a great decline in class every year with the Sharks. Ok, Steyn perhaps, but he hasn’t improved any since going to the Sharks. Perhaps we’ll finally see improvement now that he’s overseas.

A career with the Sharks: Instant glory, but a certainty of short miserable declining career before you’re replaced by the next purchase.

@Bouts: Got to agree – Free State is like a production factory for Boks – but then what happens the cheque book comes out and hey presto they become Sharkies

And Steyns move to Europe must be because of lack of comfort at the Sharks , dont blame him and i am sure Muirs constant chopping and changing didnt help Steyns development at all.

Now he is back at 12 , a position where he showed he is the best ( ala WC) , watch this boy become a great

@Pepe: How about all the Free State players returning to the Cheetahs from the Sharks, the Sharks will then look more like the “B” team side Natal have always been!!! Are you not able to develop your own talent?

@Pepe: I am sure that after considerable consideration that they will decide to not play for a team who cannot reach the CC finals

It is claimed that Frans Steyn earns almost R11 million a year. Not even the Sharks can come close to that! Money talks.

Why keep such a talent on the bench? Bizarre!

At least they havent picked Louis Strydom.

That joker couldnt even pass a prune if he drank a bottle of laxative…

‘Too much of a hassle to get the guys up to Windhoek’…..jeez Hawes, how the heck are you going to get the Cheetahs to New Zealand then..?

    Play Sias!
He is the real deal. Play his boet too!

Although I think Sias is a quality player there is no place for him in Super 14 Rugby, he is way too small, unlike his boet he does not have the power to play at this level, imagine Lauaki running at this kid, opposition teams will have a field day running in his channel all day long and gaining 10m at a time, its a pity but its true that in the modern game, size does matter, I dont think this kid ways more than 70kg, and he does not have the attacking skills of a Giteau, so Vodacom cup is where he belongs I believe

Its amazing how players like Sias and Robert are rated despite their obvious lack of bulk and yet the likes of Paulse, Adi, etc are too small to play top level rugby.

Double standards if you ask me.

There’s a difference. Adi cant tackle for ****. Rubbish player.

Breytie was a legend who was always big enough for international rugby. Had a big heart too.

Hamkas, sorry boet but that is Old School Jake White kak. Brussouw would not have been selected because of his size. Carter is not exactly big either. Secondly look how Percy bulked up. Nah they are the future of rugby.
