Moller to make tighthead move

Moller to make tighthead move

JD Moller will be utilised as a tighthead in the 2010 Super 14 despite playing most of his career at loosehead.

The Stormers have battled to find a quality No 3 and will rely heavily on the solid but unspectacular Brok Harris in the coming season. Springbok Brian Mujati was the incumbent last season, but has since moved to Northampton. A quick scan through the squad suggests there’s not much cover in terms of experienced specialists.

Head coach Allister Coetzee told keo.co.za on Monday that it was a concern, but tempered that statement by pointing to the shift of Moller to the right-hand side of the scrum, a move he believes will be successful.

Wicus Blaauw and JC Kritzinger will concentrate on loosehead this season, and the Stormers will also have Argentinean recruit Eusebio Guinazu as a tighthead option.

The Stormers will field a young and experienced combination against UCT this Saturday in Riebeck West. The practice match will be played in chukkas and Coetzee will ensure that all 25 players in the named squad get a run.

The exercise will also see new signings Fabian Juries and Lionel Cronje getting their first run in the Stormers set up.

Stormers - Fabian Juries, JJ Engelbrecht, Frikkie Welsh, Paul Bosch, Sireli Naqelevuki, Lionel Cronje, Bolla Conradie, Pieter Louw, Hilton Lobberts, Pieter Myburgh, Anton van Zyl, Rynhardt Elstadt, JD Moller, Callie Visagie, JC Kritzinger.
Subs: Sydney Tobias, Hein van der Merwe, Eucebo Guinaza, Martin Muller, Conraad Britz, Jacque Potgieter, Louis Shreuder, Jurgen Visser, Stokkies Hanekom, Johan Sadie.

Glad to see Johan Sadie there (albeit on the bench), as I said last year, this youngster will become a star !!

I thought Sirellis’ contract expired next month. Don’t tell me they’ve given him a new one?

Who are all of these no-name-brands? And all this has-beens. I am disappointed in this squad I mean we are talking about the Stormers not some EC Mickey Mouse team.

Rassie needs to be reprimanded for this.

    The no-name-brands,

    JJ Engelbrecht
    Paul Bosch
    Lionel Cronje
    Rynhardt Elstadt
    Callie Visagie

    The has-beens

    Fabian Juries
    Frikkie Welsh
    Bolla Conradie
    Anton van Zyl

@David: good point I will add him to the has-been list.

btw what ever happened to that other big wing Koster? will he ever play at the highest level again or did WP ruin this one too?

  • 55.David: Reply to this comment

    @RedLion:
He’s recovering from injury. I think he’ll be fit in about a couple of weeks or so.

  • 56.RedLion: Reply to this comment

@David: I hope AC keeps him on the wing … we need something big to stop Banaham in the final of RWC 2011.

@RedLion: if he doesnt breakdown again this year he,ll probably make the EOYT squad

As promised, Sireli is now added to the has-beens list.

    Fabian Juries
    Frikkie Welsh
    Bolla Conradie
    Anton van Zyl
    Sireli Naqelevuki

@redlion i think you will find a lot more no name and has beens in the lions squad.
Anton van Zyl a has been? I dont think so. JJ engelbrecht is also an exciting you prospect.
    Thats just my opinion.

  • 60.RedLion: Reply to this comment

@JJK: hmmmm, If you recall it was Anton van Zyl who could not catch a ball at line out time just a year ago in the S14, he was badly exposed. As a lock he lacks height big time. Schalk is taller than him … oh it is true.

So if the WP think that they got some some kind of a good lock in van Zyl think again.

p.s. we have Lombaard the next Bakkies Botha.

  • 61.JJK: Reply to this comment

@redlion. I will have to check out this lombaard guy. We definately
need another bakkies in the springbok setup. Dont think bakkies will last past
rwc 2011. For Wp , i like bekker. I see they are using him in the bacline after a few phases to try and
create something with his pace and skills. Expecially against props as defenders.
Hope fondse will do the hardwork. Wp need a good hardworking lock.

@RedLion: 1.93m both he and Schalla

He is a journeyman, returning to Cape Town where he belongs

The Lions must be back on another 3 year plan, I guess. What will this seasons excuses be?

  • 63.JL1: Reply to this comment

@JJK: Bakkies and Matfield can easily last for many more years

Simon Shaw is getting signed for another 2 years with Wasps, he will be 37 this year and Pelous from France was 40 when he retired

If SA Rugby can manage players better then our players will be able to last for longer as well instead of playing every game every year

Any prop with a modicum of intelligence should be able to handle LH or TH positions. Just need 5-6 games to settle in. It’s been done before with success. Actually an advantage if you’ve played both positions.

    Brian Mujati is another mystery.

He was doing so well in 2008, was selected even for the Boks but faded heavily afterwards.

Always felt that he was a promising player.

  • 67.SodaJoe: Reply to this comment

@JimT: Jim you, me and Spooner had a very long debate on this.

At the time your opnion was that this was very very difficult and only accomplished by a few guys – Noriega, CJ and I can’t remember who else.

The discussion revolved around technique and aptitude.

  • 68.RedLion: Reply to this comment

@JL1: no excuses, we have no Boks, no superstars and really no-one expects the Lions to perform. But we have 30 grafters and a great coaching staff aided by the King Carlos who will do well and surprise many.

@Sheriff: Mujati picked up what I like to call WP mountain fever. It affects successful Lions players who become Boks who make the mistake of moving to the WP. I can list dozens of players who picked up this sickness in the Cape never to recover.

Johannesburg – A man was found breaking into a house through its roof in Laudium, west of Pretoria on Thursday, said police.

“He was found removing tiles from the roof, trying to gain access to the house,” Captain Jan Legoabe said.

The 26-year-old set off the alarm, police arrived and arrested him. He had been linked to other crimes in Pretoria and would appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

    wtf

  • 75.grant10: Reply to this comment

@SpringbokSarah: ja…and the problem is they re having to change at such a high level…..so thrown in the deep end…..and often with poor results….

  • 76.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

@grant10: exactly… how old is JD? Really stupid to move him now… just buy a player if the young ones aren’t pulling through

  • 77.grant10: Reply to this comment

    @SpringbokSarah: JD must be 26?

Stormers must sign CJ V D Linde in May….he wants to come home…..and also not let JDV slip through the net…

  • 78.RedLion: Reply to this comment

    @grant10: I am back ROAR!

CJ is not what he appears to be. He is the wrong size for a TH prop. Biggy will tell you that he is not feared on the wet or dry fields up north, in fact he hardly gets game time in paddy land. For him home is in the FS not the Cape … I fear if he choses to go to the Cape he will be struck down by WP mountain fever.

No it is best for the WP to go the the farms and look for a sheep farmer who carries sheep on his back ala Tommy Laubscher who was the last decent TH WP produced.

  • 79.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

@grant10: hhmmm thought he was older

The heat in the Cape has affected some Capies adversely, I fear. A rich guy is on a quest to give away all his earthly belongings. He already gave away his R2m car Audi) plus R50K to 12 car guards at the bottom of Table Mountain.

If you are from the Cape, make sure you are in his rounds next time he hands out his stuff.

aaahhhhhhhh, what’s with this obsession with putting hookers and looseheads at tighthead? Surely we have a few decent TH’s in the country? If not why not? Nothing worse than seeing a TH with his head up his arse cause he should not be there!!
