@quotemeonthat: I will quote you on that because you are spot on! When the Eastern Cape region earns their right to be there, on the rugby field, they will get it. At the moment the Pumas are more worthy of franchise because they at least know what to do with their limited rugby talent. The Eastern Cape keep telling us how many players they have and what wonderful plans they have and then trot out substandard rugby teams. For the simpletons who don't understand that rugby is a contest, where the idea is win your matches, focus less on complaining that your region has no franchise and earn it.

There are massive inconsistencies here in the article, as well as gross inaccuracies, that reveal various people at SA Rugby- Hoskins - Marinos - Mark Alexander in particular - have no will or desire to see a franchise from the Eastern Cape participate in Super Rugby - because it will be viewed - as in the case of QUOTEMEONTHAT above - that it will be done at the expense of another one of the big 5 unions.

It is a massive concern and should be addressed.

1. The Southern Kings are not properly constituted and are a pick up make shift team that is quite simply "Hoskins'Folly"

2. They have no Presidents Council Resolution recognising them as a Super Rugby franchise

3. The Southern Kings have no shareholders agreement amongst Border/EP/SWD

SA Rugby knows this - the big five know this and it is all to their advantage if the Eastern Cape remains this broken winged bird on a drip feed system that they control and keep in a semi comatose state.

For example Mark Alexander the SA Rugby Deputy President who has aspirations to be the bext President of SA Rugby - has appointed Mveleli Ncula as Acting CEO of Border at R40 large a month for the next 18 months to do what?
This is close to 3/4 of a Million that could be sunk into to the players there. Add another R20 large for Mveleli's flights and accommodation et al and SA Rugby's expenses surge past R1 million.

It is a mess and it is perpetuated by the existing leadership of SA Rugby - roll on the elections for the 26th March to usher in change and a vision and a plan to build SA Rugby's player base for all 14 unions and take the registered number of players from 512,000 to 600,000 and beyond and introduce new international tournaments for the upcoming rugby talent in all 14 unions.

Jeez, this thing gets up my nose. Especially because the team that always seem most likely to get shafted is the Cheetahs. The (domestic) success that they've had with the (limited) resources at their disposal should be rewarded!

Instead they're targeted because they're small and (relatively) poor. A Heineken Cup style relegation and promotion system seems like the only fair option. Eastern Cape rugby have done nothing on the rugby field to suggest that they deserve S14/15 rugby. Get into the Currie Cup FFS! Win some games, beat the second division trudgers like the mighty Griffons. Earn your right to be there! No one will argue if EP were hammering the Bulls and Sharks regularly!

It's pathetic, piss poor and any kind of reward (and that's what super rugby would be) is completely unjustified and undeserved.

Entitlement is a curse!

Why not have the system where the top 5 teams in the Currie Cup get to play S14.
