Lame Boks fall out…again

Lame Boks fall out…again

The Springbok Sevens side suffered another Cup quarterfinal exit against Fiji for the third consecutive time this season.

The Blitzboks had another strong start to a tournament with convincing wins against Niue and World Cup champions Wales.

However, this was followed by a defeat against New Zealand, which set up a tough Cup quarterfinal fixture against their bogey team Fiji.

This was the third time the teams met in the quarterfinal stage this season, and it proved to be the third time the Boks would produce a poor showing against the Pacific Islanders.

The Boks were beaten 21-5 by a more physical, stronger Fijian outfit after a lackluster display in the second half.

The World Series defending champions were still within reach at half-time with a 7-0 deficit, but Fiji ran through for another two converted tries to eliminate the Boks to the Plate section. Branco du Preez scored a consolation try for South Africa.

In the Plate semi-final, the Blitzboks put in a better performance with a 29-5 win against Canada.

Franki Horne grabbed a brace while Mpho Mbiyozo, Kyle Brown and Ryno Benjamin also crossed the chalk to surge into the Plate final against Australia.

The Boks then somehow blew a 17-0 lead to end a disappointing sixth after losing 26-22 to the Aussies.

The Boks raced into an early buffer through tries from Chase Minnaar, Mzwandile Stick, and Ryno Benjamin, but Australia pulled one back through James Stannard on the half-time hooter.

When Bernard Foley scored straight after the break, the Boks led by just three. The Boks’ poor defence, for the umpteenth time this season, allowed the Australians back into it, and is the main reason why they’ve had such a poor start to the series.

Kimani Situati claimed the third, again an embarrassing effort in the tackle from the Boks. Stick claimed one back to to give the Boks a brief lead, but Clinton Sills earned the winner, thanks again to woeful defence.

In other results, Samoa shocked World Series log leaders New Zealand with a 24-12 victory in the Cup semi-final. The Samoans couldn’t repeat the upset in the final as Fiji took the title with a thrilling 19-14 victory.

Springbok Sevens results, Day 2:
Cup Quarterfinal 4: Fiji 21 South Africa 5
Plate semi-final 1: Canada 5 South Africa 29
Plate final: Australia 26 South Africa 22

Some interesting QFs. Samoa and Fiji have tough draws against Kenya and the Boks. I think Canada are the surprise QF package so we should get past them although 7s is a bit of a lottery. The joint Samoan/Fijian team could find it tough in their QF v Aus too.

NZ, Fiji, England and Samoa. One of these will take Series title from SA. Most probably either NZ of Fiji. Depends in many ways on the this final.

Another perfect day in paradise… sun shining, Cake Tin filling up, pleasant light breeze. Why be anywhere less interesting (like boring, sleepy, dull old George, for instance)? Way better than Waitangi.

4:49pm: @Fern: Heard of an iPhone? Naah… probably not?

Right in front of the press box a while ago, several police officers, and a cluster of security guards accosted two bananas and other assorted fruit and veges before escorting them out.

The crowd watched on intently and booed as the group left.

They soon changed allegiances however as “nah nah nah nah nah nah nah, hey, hey, hey, goodbye rang out.

The Blitzboks caught fire and once again burnt out completely in the first half.

Fiji scored 3 unanswered tries in the second half and smoked the yarpies for the umpteenth time this year.

    They’re the BlitzedBoks.

Time for some more powerful players to come into the squad, Horne and Schoeman are not enough when it comes to the bigger teams like Fiji.

Hmmm, good thing this isn’t proper rugby. I’ll only begin watching 7s if top guys like Habana etc. get put in for the Olympics.

Watched NZ bomb out against Samoa. a very good performance by the Samoans, deserved winners. NZ had an off game and fell off a quite a few tackles.

Sevens starting losing ever since they started believing that less athletic big okes can also play… Gio Aplon, fabian Juries, Renfred Deysel, Jonathan Mokoena were the king pins… Ryno benjamin and Mpho Mbiyoso cannot do it on their own… and If you want a skilful big lad… look to Lobberts

Here’s the 2nd half, where the Boks get blitzed as usual…

Two tries under the posts already by the Aussies. Closed the gap right down.

  • 25.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

Try #3 and the Aussies are now in front…

  • 26.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

SA knocked on but the ref gave them the try, then they botched the easiest conversion and Aussie hit right back with try #4 to regain the lead and defeat the Blitzed Boks. Losers!

    @TheTackler:
    how about you chokers?
Who has the bragging rights of being the holders of the William Webb Ellis trophy?

  • 28.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

At least NZ made it past the QFs and stayed in the Cup comp. SA departed at the QF stage and only contested the Plate, and then got smoked by Australia.

Oh, and NZ still comfortably lead the 2010 Sevens Series. The Blitzed Boks haven’t ever got past the QF stages into the big boys’ Cup contest yet.

The yarpies might as well polish up the Sevens Cup and crate it up for shipment to Wellington already. Which is, of course, where it belongs.

And Wellington is still absolutely, potively THE stonking party capital of the Sevens World, win lose or draw.

  • 29.TheTackler: Reply to this comment

    POSITIVELY…

  • 30.Springbokvel: Reply to this comment

This SA sevens side is a bit kak tbh. The Varsity Cup could be a good competition to find players for the 7`s game.

We would be the best if we could select fully on merit. Having said that, we could still be very good at 7`s if only they selected the best players of colour. It seems as if not enough is being done to seek the very best players of colour (especially for the 7`s game).

@Fern: 24 hrs after the tickets for the Wellington Sevens came on the market, each and every last ticket was sold. It was a sell-out crowd on both days. The only empty spaces were left by people who just couldn’t last the two-day party distance. But the organisers got their money all the same.

  • 48.The Almighty Shaun: Reply to this comment

Its amazing how the sevens team started to fall apart after Ryno Benjamin was suspended for speaking out… about certain players being accomodated for “reconcilation” purposes… He spoke out against politics in rugby it seems.. By politics he meant the Boere Network focusing on whitening up 7′s so that we did not end up with a team of black players getting the gold at the Olympics…

    The door is still open.
