Ex-AB sorry for teen assaults

Former All Black Robin Brooke has made a public apology for assaulting two teenagers in Fiji on New Year’s day.

Brooke apologised for groping a 15-year-old girl and then assaulting a 17-year-old boy (both from New Zealand) for trying to intervene last month, adding that he did not know what he was doing because he was intoxicated.

‘It was 3am … I had had too much to drink,’ he said on a New Zealand television programme. ‘Within 20 minutes of finding out what I had done, I was on the phone to the Whittakers [the family of the 17-year-old boy]. I set up a meeting with them. I rang the guardian of the young lady concerned as well.’

Brooke has agreed to attend alcohol counselling, a $3000 donation to charity, reimbursement of the girl’s airfare and payment of legal fees.

However, he could still face a $200,000 lawsuit from the Whittakers.

    Let the Fijians sort him out. A public whooping by the family will be punishment enough…

    @flanka:

    It was New Years Eve.
    Why not?
    At 17 I was at university.
    Of course I will feel different when my daughter reaches 15

    Even if they shouldn’t be there it does not excuse Robin.

    How did they arrive at the figure of $3000 for charity? A bit random. :?:

    tis a shame that it took the parents to file a civil claim against Brooke before he realised the error of his ways and issued an apology. This is a classic case of a boofhead old-school rugby mentality where star players had everything catered for them and their misdemeanors continually swept under the carpet. Those days ended in 1996 when the game when pro and everyone became fair game.

    @DEE DAH:

    Oh, and like alcohol is just confined to Kiwis now huh ? as dumb and ignorant as saying ‘those Safas and their charlie’.

    I buy the sincerity of this apology about as much as I buy the sincerity of the dodgy lovechild apology of Our Father Who Art In Parliament.

    And that whole “within 20 minutes of finding out what I had done” business leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Why can’t an apology just be heartfelt, sincere and unconditional? Why must he still try and be some kind of hero?

    Booze or no booze, a groper is a groper and a bully is a bully. And the world doesn’t need them.
