Saffas abroad looks at the South Africans who have performed in Europe this weekend.

In the LV=Cup semi-final, 13 South Africans were in the two squads. Juandre Kruger, Brian Mujati and Brett Sharman started in the Northampton pack, while Schalk Brits, Mouritz Botha, Jacques Burger, captain Ernst Joubert, Neil de Kock, Derick Hougaard, and Brad Barritt were in the Sarries XV.

Joubert was sin-binned with his side 9-5 up in the first half, and from there matters unravelled for Sarries. Hougaard kicked 12 poins and Justin Melck came off the bench to score, but Mujati clinched the result with his try as Northampton won 31-20.

Frans Steyn‘s Racing Metro were upset 45-31 by Montauban, with three other South Africans featuring for the losers. Greg Goosen was alongside Steyn in the midfield, while Jacques Cronje and Francois van der Merwe were in the pack.

Sam Gerber scored in Bayonne’s 22-13 upset over Clermont, while Daan Human and Shaun Sowerby started in Toulouse’s comprehensive 34-3 hammering of Montpellier.

Joe van Niekerk-led Toulon carried on their good form with a 19-6 win over Castres. Ross Skeate started at lock, while Darren Nell came off the bench for log-leaders Castres.
