Fourie’s potent energy

Jaque Fourie has sparked the Stormers back to life.

In the new issue of SA Rugby magazine, former Bok technical adviser Eddie Jones and Stormers backline coach Robbie Fleck analyse Fourie’s game and explain why he – and not the headline-hogging Bryan Habana – is the key to the Stormers’ success this year.

‘Jaque is a fantastic runner off the ball, which means he will pick a line and identify space where at first there doesn’t seem to be any,’ says Fleck. ‘He’s also deceptively quick, so when he hits a hole, he makes it count. He has a good sidestep, but he hardly ever needs it because defenders are beaten by the angle.’

Fourie also talks about his move to the Cape, his dream of winning the Super 14 and Currie Cup, why he hates being rested, and his Springbok ambitions.

Also in the new issue:

– As a white wing, Gerhard van den Heever faces immense obstacles in his quest to earn Springbok selection

Hugh-Reece Edwards on being back at the Shark Tank after a decade in the coaching wilderness

– Former Springbok prop Balie Swart’s mission to save the scrum

BJ Botha on his imminent return to South Africa from Ulster, the country’s scrum troubles, and winning over referees

Brad Barritt: ‘I want to play for England’

– Italy’s SA-born lock Quintin Geldenhuys on the mixed emotions he felt when facing the Boks, and whether he’ll come back home

Refereeing projects could change the way officials and spectators see the game

– From being named IRB U19 Player of the Year to having open heart surgery to save his life, the progression of Crusaders centre Robert Fruean through the rugby ranks has been anything but normal

Justin Harrison was banned for eight months after taking cocaine with his Bath team-mates last year, but the Brumbies have given him an opportunity to make amends

– While a rare neurological disorder has put Andre Venter in a wheelchair, the former Springbok hardman has not lost hope

– PLUS: Jake White on the new law interpretations

So by my count that’s 6 Stormers related articles since the solitary Bulls blitz Highlanders, which also happened to be the actual Bulls game thread.

The one sided reporting on this site has predictably gone to an even higher level in correlation with the Stormers march up the log.

@Simon: yes, yes simon i know, you’ve sold me that pitch before, habana, steyn, spies, fourie, jdv, du preez, schalk etc, the problem is that some of us are not braindead that we crave to read about the same players over & over again, year-in year-out.

How many times can a sane person be expected to care about what is francois steyn’s preferred position?

Give us a detailed article analysing [or get an expert to do it if you are inexpert] all the first choice tightheads from our s14 franchises and have all of them on the cover [j smit, wp nel, werner kruger + the stormers & lions tighthead], come up with a clever caption for the cover…

see, it’s no so hard, this is an off the cuff idea, you educate your readers on the intricacies of the tighthead position, while you have john smit on the cover to satisfy your “usual suspect” quota @ the same time.

Old Owen Nkumane has issues… man does he have issues…

    on the rugby programme yesterday…

Host (can’t remember his name): So Owen… what’s up with the Sharks… must be of great concern…?

Owen: Well not really… the Crusaders lost their first five games before and then won the title… The Sharks can come back from their tour and only need to win eight games and they can still make the play-offs…!!

    and later…

Host (can’t remember his name): So the Stormers are looking good…

Owen: Well… there are several aspects of their play that the coach can’t be happy about…

Host (can’t remember his name): for example…?

Owen: Well… if you look at turnovers… they are nearly into the double figures… [they were actually 11] with errors like that they’ll struggle to make the play-offs…!!

    W.T.F….?

he just can’t bring himself to say anything positive about the Stormers…

reckon he must be bitter because they never signed him up for the good life in the Cape…!!

Ag absolute kak Simon. Honestly. Fourie scores one try and suddenly he’s the Stormers’ saviour. Don’t make out Fourie to be what he’s not – a creative player. He’s a good hard running 13 but he isn’t creative and hardly ever offloads in the tackle. The players that are making the difference to the backline are Grant, De Jongh, Habana and Pietersen. What Fourie is good at is sucking in defenders but he’d be even better if he passed more. I think we need to be going down the same route as Aus by having a playmaker at 12. It’s a little too soon to be lauding Fourie. Jeez.

“As a white wing, Gerhard van den Heever faces immense obstacles in his quest to earn Springbok selection” – you have got to love this snippet. A concise summary of the skin-colour conundrum/balls-up that SA suffere from. From apartheid to BEE to AA to Quotas – it will always continue and there never will be an end. “Aluta” will always “continua”. At least Van der Heever will be/or is good enough to play for most International sides. Aus/England/France may beckon for Mr. Van der Heever if he would like to experience International rugby. He shouldn’t jeopardise it by playing in one of these one-offs to preclude him from choosing which nation he would like to represent in future, should he be deemed too pale to play on the wing.

@Heavens Game: van den Heever is too young to play for the Boks. He’s not even completed a S14 season and fans are talking about him playing for the Boks. He’s got the talent, lots of speed and good ball skills but he needs to shore up his positional play and defence. Throw him in at the deep end and he’s gonna panic like Kirchner did. Still a fine young prospect and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t play for the Boks in the future but right he’s too inexperienced. The same goes for Mapoe.

@KZN King Shark: 131. You have a point if the argument of Van der Heever’s merits for selection is based on experience or his attributes as a player – there is no argument there. But if it is too difficlt to play for the Boks because of his skin colour, then that is a different can of worms.

    @KZN King Shark:

Shows what a Sharks fan knows.

Fourie set up the first try against the Hurricanes by making three defenders hesitate, drawing them in and then flinging it wide.

He also set up Habana, who fell just a meter from scoring.

Let’s not forget his defensive organization skills.

The icing on the cake though, is that you praise de Jongh. Now that’s the only problem with the Stormers backline, as soon as Grant skips de Jongh and Fourie gets the ball, the magic starts happening.

Awesome mag this month. Jacque Fourie is being missed by the Lions and I think they regret him leaving. Hey we the Stormers are just to happy – he is playing brilliant rugby.

Oh great! Another “Jague Fourie” article, I mean c’mon. This is the last guy I wanted to see on the cover. Give him a story but for goodness sakes don’t put him on the front cover!! A person knowing nothing about rugby that reads SA RUGBY MAGAZINES would think we have sevens rugby or something by the way the same players are always on the cover.

@ Skunkie, actually Schalk Burger was on the cover just a few issues ago.

@ Simon 102, Why didn’t we get even a mention of Smit’s 100th CAP then, Smit is a so called “STAR” (There wasn’t even an article covering the story, just a sentence or two on one of the greatest Springbok captain’s 100th cap for 1 Super 14 franchise in the linebreaks section)!!! Dissapointing…
