Gym face Kimberley test
16 Mar 2010
Diamantveld will be looking for an upset victory on Saturday when they play Paarl Gym as part of their 75-year anniversary celebration.
The Kimberley outfit is coached by former Cheetahs utility back MJ Smith, who told keo.co.za: ‘Saturday will be a massive encounter for us. We expect Paarl Gym to present us with a physical onslaught and we definitely consider ourselves to be the underdogs. Our school only has 350 boys, so we face many obstacles, however we will be relying on a vocal home crowd coupled with dogged determination from our boys to give Gym a tough contest.’
Diamantveld are likely to keep the game tight and rely on their Griquas Craven Week duo, lock Herman Groenewald and prop Nico van der Westhuizen, to spearhead their team’s attack. Gym on the other hand will want the game to open up so that they can run their bigger opposition around and tire them out.
Gym had one of their poorer seasons in 2009 and have handed the coaching reigns over to former WP and Griquas scrumhalf Christoff Lotter.
The new coach will rely heavily on No 8 Christiaan Smit, who represented the WP Craven Week side last season and possesses pace and skill that always ensures his side is on the front foot and gets over the advantage line.
The game kicks off at 16:10.
