Because we don’t need to do that. We have depth and quality in most positions at all levels. There’s nothing wrong with throwing a player in at the deep end but it depends on on the player, what position he plays and the match.

There’s also nothing wrong allowing a player time to develop. It’s just a different school of thought.

South Africa would throw in a youngster (Frans Steyn, JPP etc etc), only problem is that we would ask the winger to play lock, then move him to scrum half, then throw him in at full back. Then, after a few poor games in positions he is not used to, the media and politicians would slate the coach for overlooking other players who they feel would be better.

The coach would then continue to break the youngster’s confidence till he decides to go play oversees where he will mature and become a great player and the same media & politicians will ask why we let such a great talent go.
