Sevens Boks smash Japan

The Springbok Sevens easily negotiated Japan 40-0 to get off to the ideal start in Adelaide.

The victory included six tries, with Sampie Mastriet scoring a hat-trick, while Cecil Afrika, Mpho Mbiyozo and Ryno Benjamin also crossed the whitewash. Branco du Preez kicked two conversions while Afrika converted three.

‘I am very happy with the win especially if you consider all the disruptions we had during the week,’ said coach Paul Treu.

‘The game started out to be quite messy particularly at the breakdown in the first half, but I was really impressed with the way the players applied themselves.

‘The fact that we did not concede any points even if it’s against Japan, is something I am proud of. I was also impressed with our youngsters, in particular the performance of Sampie Mastriet. But our next focus is on France who we play tomorrow [Saturday] and we’ll have to be at our best defensively and on attack.’

The Springboks Sevens will round off the group phase by playing Samoa.

    The sneaky Taffies must have spiked the Fijians’ kava bowl. Or added some treble-strength supadupa root to the brew.

    @TheTackler:

    Can’t quite figure out what this stuff is supposed to do. It appears to have zero affect on me and I’ve drunk a lot of it.

    I must be immune.
