A 12-all draw against Samoa meant the Springbok Sevens side topped Pool B at the 2010 Adelaide Sevens and qualified for the quarter-final.

A converted try to Frankie Horne in the dying stages of South Africa’s final pool match rounded off an evenly fought contest that arguably deserved to end in a draw. The Adelaide title holders held their own against an in-form Samoan outfit, matching the men from the Pacific almost point for point from start to finish.

Mikaele Pesamino opened Samoa’s account in the sixth minute, bringing his tally to eight. In response Sampie Mastriet crossed for South Africa, and with six tournament tries is second only to Pesamino, the top try-scorer thus far.

Cecil Afrika (South Africa) and Lolo Lui (Samoa) will be lamenting lost opportunities, each missing telling conversions which could have proved decisive; Afrika in the first half and Lui in the second.

Finishing top of Pool B on points difference and with two of the top five tournament try-scorers in the South African lineup [Mastriet and Ryno Benjamin with 3], the Bok Sevens side will be confident going into their quarter-final clash against Argentina.
