NZ nail Boks
21 Mar 2010
The Springbok Sevens side went down 21-14 to New Zealand in the Plate final in Adelaide.
The South Africans finished top of their group on Saturday, but for the umpteenth time this season they were knocked out of the top phase of the competition. This time they lost 17-14 in the Cup quarter-finals to Argentina.
Relegated to the Plate competition, they scored five tries in out-classing lowly Wales before they met the Kiwis.
The sides were level 14-all at the break, but a yellow card to Frankie Horne before the break proved decisive. Kurt Baker scored the winner for New Zealand early in the second half, and their impressive defence meant they held on for the victory.
In the Cup final, surprise finalists America had their trophy dreams shattered when they went down 38-10 to Samoa.

FFS did whoever reported this even watch the game?
We had them on the ripes at the end – with a man down, in their 22, but the main problem is that our guys have no BMT and start throwing wild white-line fever passes. We could EASILY have scored if one player had the common sense to run around to form an overlap. Instead the doos throws a huge long pass to nobody in particular, negating any overlap, and putting us under massive pressure. That guy (not sure who it was) should be WHIPPED.
And FFS!! Losing to Argentina? Thy er ashrewd players, but we can negate that by holding onto the ball and palying direct rugby – they dont like that. Even Kenya beats Argies – easily!!

ripes = ropes

@SjamBok: your weren’t happy then?

@SjamBok: without sounding like a smartass, on the ropes generally means you are winning and about to finish them off…and we held out SA with 6 men and still won so all in all a fair victory for NZ.

Who cares?

@captain fantail: No I have a different understanding of the temrinology. We had them on the ropes means that they were reeling with 6 men on the field and the game was there for the taking. Or at least eth draw was.
We just could not land the knockout blow.
All it needed was a bit of patience and some comommon sense. Instead we got panic and white line fever.
And I dont see it as you “holding us out” – we made stupid long passes to nobody, even when we weren’t under pressure from the defence.
Have your say
