Bath breeze past Harlequins

Butch James featured in Bath’s 24-13 victory over the Harlequins at The Rec on Saturday.

The Springbok flyhalf had a quiet game by his own standards and captain Michael Claassens was in trouble with the ref when he tackled Quins’ Danny Care illegally. The former Bok No 9 was sin-binned but, fortunately for Bath, the temporary disadvantage only cost his side six points.

Luke Watson had a strong game at No 8 with some powerful runs and clever offloads. Bath outscored Quins three tries to one.

South African-born Hendre Fourie, who has his sights set on playing for England, was on the losing side as Leeds went down 19-0 to Gloucester. Brian Mujati played 48 minutes in Northampton’s 14-9 win over Wasps.

In Celtic League action, Jean de Villiers scored a try in Munster’s 27-19 win against Glasgow. CJ van der Linde came off the bench in Leinster’s 17-14 victory over Connacht.

watson was brilliant. commentators said he was the standout player for bath with some strong runs, big tackles and great linking skills. seems to have had a huge impact at bath. they were losing until he got there.

Jean was man of the match. He scored a brilliant try in the corner, acrobatic skills. It was more impressive than that try of the year by Jaque Fourie.

@Transformation: why the Butch hate transie? Bath always nail the oppo when he plays,

‘Preferring subtle offloads on the gainline to interminable bludgeoning and pointless rucks, Bath’s enterprise — brilliantly conducted by the unflappable Springbok Butch James — was rewarded with three excellent tries.’

Butch and Luke would add huge value to any Super 14 or Bok squad.

    Klaar en uit.

    Yah,
I read it too in ‘The Times’, Butch was also picked the ‘Star Man’, he played an irresistabl rugby.
All that when SAs Super14 teams sporting FHs such as Spencer, Goode, De Waal, Francis and Earl Rose on occasions,,,
    Enough said.

@Big Hit: you call it hate, i call it an opinion on a player. in a season how many games does james actually play?

  • 14.Hondo: Reply to this comment

There’s ONLY so much left in Butch’s knees, we all know that, same with Honiball 11 years ago, so if there is an intention to play him in 2011, it needs a careful planing and allocating resources to get him there, stop playing him at once and rest him for 12 months.
I doubt someone really bother here.

@Big Hit: it just shows how average the likes of toby flood, cipriani, hodgson are, if butch is seen as an enterprising pivot

Butch is passe catching up to the likes of Carlos Spencer fast. We got far better over here but idiots running the show just don’t know it.

    @Big Hit:
The axis Ruan-Butch-Frans Styen should be preferred in the RWC 11 to that of FdP-M Styen-JdV
I put the odds for that to happened at 1:25 though.

@Hondo: the last time butch played for the springboks, he was k@k! when quizzed about his indifferent form, he cited fatigue as the reason yet after a dismal tri-nations he went straight back into the guiness premiership! now if a player has no idea or plan to manage his own career [or maybe driven by greed] the springbok management cannot be blamed for that]

“rest him for 12 months”? Who says what his form will be like after a whole bloody year of rest?

@Transformation: Those were the Boks and Butch’s first games under tap and go ELVs, once they adapted their tactics in the last game v Australia they won by 50 points with James at 10. He didn’t move to the NH for greed, Sharks wouldn’t renew his deal at the time.

@Hondo: I wouldn’t drop FDP but agree on the 10/12
