Lusanda’s late score sinks Saints

Bishops grabbed a last-gasp 25-24 victory over St Andrew’s on Saturday when replacement prop Lusanda Doli scored from close range.

While Bishops have had a stranglehold over their Grahamstown counterparts for the last five seasons, they were outplayed for the majority of this match.

‘We were less than convincing and lucky to come away with the spoils,’  Bishops head coach Dave Mallett told ‘But we will take it and it was a good wake up call for our boys.’

Bishops started the game well when hooker Seb Matterson crossed the line after a great driving maul and fullback Tim Swiel added the conversion.

But the visitors dominated proceedings over the next 20 minutes and exposed Bishops out wide. First wing Godfrey Toplis dotted down and then a quick tap from inside the hosts’ 22 resulted in No 8 Mark Prior crashing over. Both tries were converted by Angus Macdonald, who also added a penalty.

Bishops responded through flanker Tshepo Motale, who broke away and scored near the poles, but Prior’s second try gave St Andrew’s a 24-12 lead at the break.

However, the hosts reduced the deficit to four points early in the second half via a penalty from Swiel and a try from centre Nathan Nell.

St Andrew’s spent most of the next 20 minutes in Bishops’ half, but could not produce the score that would have sealed the win.

Bishops absorbed the pressure and surged downfield. After a series of attacks, Doli dived over from a maul in the final act of the match.

In other big schoolboy clashes, Grey got their Easter festival off to a good start with a 26-11 win over SACS. Freakish gale force winds swept the field forcing both sides to play more conservatively.

It was a day of surprises at the festival with Daniel Pienaar claiming a shock 21-15 victory against Michaelhouse, while Framesby upset Maritzburg College 31-26. Hilton managed to hold on against Louis Botha for an 18-12 win.
