Maties claim Varsity Cup hat-trick
30 Mar 2010
Maties secured their third consecutive Varsity Cup title as they beat Ikeys 17-14 in the 2010 final on Monday.
It wasn’t the prettiest of Cape derbies but the game never lacked intensity. Both teams were physical in the closely contested game and gave it their all in the low-scoring match-up. But in the end, Maties’ finishing saw them triumph.
Before the match, the odds pointed towards a convincing Maties win and rightfully so. The defending champions were undefeated eight games in the 2010 campaign and they had the backing of a 20 000 capacity home crowd.
However, southern suburb rivals Ikeys did well to keep within reach until the final minute, despite scoring no tries. They could have done better with a more tactical approach.
Ikeys enjoyed a good amount of possession but they persisted to run the ball from their own half. This never troubled Maties’ defence and allowed them to restrict UCT too easily.
However, in a rare visit to Maties’ half, Ikeys pivot Douglas Mallet gave his team the early lead as he converted a penalty. But it wasn’t too long until the defending champions found themselves ahead.
In typical Maties fashion, they stole the lead with a two-try blitz moments later. Wing Tythan Adams ran in at the corner for the first score after Maties surged into the Ikeys’ 22 and found space out wide. Pivot Andre Kemp added the extras. Then from the restart, wing Wilhelm Loock’s chip and chase saw centre Charl Weideman dive in for their second try.
Ikeys hit back with a long-range penalty from centre Marcel Brache, which kept them in the game.
Maties had several scoring opportunities to extend their lead but Therlow Pietersen did well to fend off the home team’s momentum. The UCT fullback was composed under the high ball and his last defensive efforts kept his team in the match.
Neither team managed to add to their tally as the score remained 12-6 at half-time.
Mallet had an opportunity to reduce Maties’ lead to four points early in the second stanza, but he missed his goal attempt. Maties then capitalised.
It took individual brilliance for Stellenbosch University to score as centre Danie Poolman collected his chip into space for his team’s third five-pointer.
Mallet missed another penalty, but a late try from replacement forward Sam Peter created an intense finish as they trailed by three points. But Maties held on for the win.

3 tries to one – the winning margin probably flatters the Ikeys who were on the defense for at least 2/3rds of the match.
Skoppy, the reason that the game was held at Stellenbosch is because Maties finished first on the league – that is the incentive to win the league – the same goes for the super 14, currie cup etc.

Maties too cynical im afraid – killed ikeys at breakdown and just seem stronger kicking wise too. UCT didnt have the territory but had the heart. Campus will have a dull feel tomorrow

Also feel Newlands hosting would be great – what an opportunity for the players to run out there. Apparently inter-schools had a great turnout there last week. I reckon you could get 30 odd thousand

The legend of Van Hunks
——————————————————————————–
There is an old legend about the white cloud that is known as the Table Cloth that sometimes covers the top of Table Mountain and rises behind Cape Town. Many years after the Dutch began the settlement, a fierce pirate called Van Hunks lived in a cottage between the mountain and a hill called devil’s peak. He spent most of his time sitting outside the cottage, puffing on a large pipe. Most people were afraid of him and he had few visitors.
One Day, a stranger came wearing a hat and a fine set of clothes. Very rudely, without introduction the stranger asked for some tobacco. The old pirate invited him to sit down, and then he filled the stranger’s pipe. As they smoked, Van Hunks boasted of the wicked deeds of his pirate days. What’s more, he boasted that no one could smoke as much tobacco as he could.
So the stranger challenged Van Hunks to a smoking contest. They divided the tobacco between them and each man settled down to smoke more than the other. By the next morning the whole mountain was covered in a great cloud of smoke as the stranger and Van Hunks smoked furiously.
At last the stranger gave up. Wiping his brow, he accidentally knocked off his hat to reveal two horns sprouting from his head. The stranger was the devil, and he was very angry at being beaten. With a mighty clap of thunder both he and Van Hunks disappeared. But the cloud remained.
Today when the wind known as the south easter blows, the cloud appears and the people of Cape Town look up and say that the devil and Van Hunks are smoking again.
