Deccan fall short
1 Apr 2010
Herschelle Gibbs scored 50 but was unable to prevent a 24-run defeat to Kolkata on Thursday.
The hosts posted a competitive total of 181 thanks to skipper Sourav Ganguly, who overcame a slow start to finish on 88 off 54 deliveries. Together with David Hussey (31), the pair scored the bulk of the runs in a 78-run partnership.
After a shaky start to the Deccan innings, Gibbs played a measured knock and was complemented by the powerful hitting of Andrew Symonds. Unfortunately for the Chargers, the pair couldn’t lift the run rate and left too much for the middle order to do at the death.
Credit should go to the Kolkata bowlers. Out of the six players used, five conceded less than eight runs and over. Chris Gayle only bowled the final over and claimed the bonus wicket of Symonds.
Kolkata – 181-6 (20 overs)
Sourav Ganguly 88, David Hussey 31, Andrew Symonds 2-26.
Deccan – 157-5 (20 overs)
Herschelle Gibbs 50, Andrew Symonds 45.
Kolkata won by 24 runs.
