Paul Roos claimed a 26-15 win against Jeppe on the first day of the St John’s Easter festival.
The Stellenbosch school ran in four tries through Errol Jaggers, Tshotsho Mbovane, Dawie de Kooker and Clint Lemkus, three of which were converted by Gideon Meiring. Jeppe’s points all came from the boot of Devan McDermid, who slotted five penalties.
The result was a big disappointment for the Joburg side, who were coming off the back of a win against arch-rivals KES.
In other matches, Affies edged Nelspruit 15-10. WJ Strydom grabbed a double for the Pretoria side, with Warren Gilbert kicking a conversion and penalty. Nelspruit replied with a five pointer from Marchant van Aarde with Neil Manley slotting a conversion and penalty.
St John’s lost 10-5 to their namesakes from Harare. Boris Fodouop-Mwale scored the visitors’ try with Andrew Wilkinson kicking a conversion and penalty, while Ethan Brownhill responded with a try for the Joburg side.
Pretoria Boys High edged an FNB Invitational XV 22-19. Boys High’s tries were scored by Donovan O’Grady, Matthew Currie and Simon Kerrod, with Currie kicking two conversions and a penalty. The FNB side also scored three tries, via Marshall Fredricks, Roaul Kulsen and Chevandre van Schoor, two of which were converted by Lee-Roy Bitterhout.
Paarl Boys beat Helpmekaar 26-18 thanks to tries from Deven Williams and Louis Nel. Gaven Hauptfleisch kicked both conversions and four penalties. Helpemekaar replied with three tries from Andre van Heerden, Tiaan Raubenheimer and Sebastian van Heerden, but all of the conversions were missed. Quinton Norris did, however, manage to kick a penalty.
