Jho double sinks Wynberg

Dale edged Wynberg 14-11 at the St John’s Easter Festival on Monday after trailing 6-0 at the break.

Andile Jho scored Dale’s two tries which were both converted by Bungi Kobese. David Maasch crossed the line for Wynberg with Dylan Frylinck kicking two penalties.

Paul Roos made it three wins out of three at the festival by pounding Pretoria Boys 29-0. Their tries were by scored by Renier Marais, Craig Barry, Clint Lemkus and Tshotsho Mbovane (two). Gideon Meiring kicked two conversions.

In the first match of the day, Nelspruit and Helpmekaar drew 7-7. Nico van Vuuren scored Nelspruit’s try, with Neil Manley kicking the conversion. Sebastian van Heerden went over for Helpmekaar and Quinton Norris added the extras.

St John’s from Harare capped off a good festival with a convincing 35-9 win against the Golden Lions XV. The Zimbabweans tries were scored by Jeans Phillip, Takudzwa Chipumha (two) and Danielle Rouke, while James Forrester kicked three conversions and three penalties. For the Lions XV, Quinton Bothma slotted three penalties.

Hosts St John’s suffered yet another defeat when they lost 26-24 to the FNB Invitational XV. FNB’s tries were scored by Roaul Kulsen, Lee-Roy Bitterhout (two) and Chevandre van Schoor, with Lee-Roy Bitterhout kicking three conversions. St John’s responded with tries from Chad Henson and Dave Jacobs (two). Jason Newton slotted all three conversions and added a penalty.

Paarl Boys beat Jeppe 17-3 thanks to a try by Leon le Roux and an excellent kicking display from Gavin Hauptfleisch, who nailed a conversion and three penalties. Devan McDermid’s penalty gave Jeppe their only points of the game.

Affies continued their good run with a 49-3 thrashing of Outeniqua. The Pretoria school ran in seven converted tries through WJ Strydom (two), Nordus van der Walt, Gebrandt Grobler, Rudi van Rooyen, Brink Botha and Warren Gilbert. Outeniqua’s only points came from the boot of Johan Cronjé.
