@bananaboy: bananaboy, Good on you mate to use A. Venter's story as a inspiration for your childrens finals on Saturday. Yes you left before seeing him play for the Boks. He was a brilliant player. I saw him playing for the Boks at Ellis Park. Magnificent he was. Gave everything 100%.

I wish I could seen him play more often. I left SA in 1994 and for the first 5 years of my life overseas did not get to see a Bokke game but read all about his exploits on the field. If I could lay claim to half the courage this man has displayed in life and rugby I would be satisfied- A giant of the game and of Life in general. I am going to use his story as inspiration for my kids when they play the national finals on Saturday in Holland.

The best blindside to ever play the game in my eyes.

He was almost superhuman in his ability on the field.Hardly EVER got taken off.Had an engine that never stopped.

One of my all time favourite players.

A farking disgrace – 26 comments with 5 coming from Kiwis.

All the so-called rugby “experts” and “enthusiasts” seem to have no interest in a Bok LEGEND.

There are more comments on an oblique Bath article which happens to include the biggest puking, overrated prat to have ever worn a Bok Jersey.

A detailed comparison between the 2 would be illuminating (Puke on the Bok vs. Giving everything for the Bok) but would be way too much disrespect to Venter, a legend.

Those hypocrites who come on this site with their petty parochialism or jealousies and seem to ignore the admirable courage against adversity of a brave ex Bok, and whats more – one who is UNIVERSALLY admired, are nothing less than farking pathetic.

Shame on you all! The Kiwi’s on this site have more credibility than all of you little idiots.

A player before my interest in rugby ignited, but my brother knows him WELL, hints on his farm near Kimberly annually.

Anyway read the comment about the k@k spoken about GvdH and this has got like 20 comments. Really now..

Anyway Venter is a boss. I can only wish to meet such an inspiration one day. The epitomy of what a Bok represents

I remember the Great Frik and also the Great Andre – my personal favourite rugby heroes of all time. Get well Andre – you have a few million friends and admirers who you have not yet met who will pray for your return to health! Thanks for what you have done for the great game!

A man around which the word respect is heard a lot.

Unfortunately there is a certain melancholy that is inevitable in an article like this, though I sense that the man himself doesn’t project this quality.

There are certain words that have lost their power through overuse, but “an inspiration” still does it for me.

@Taahirah: I was about to write exactly the same thing – 12 comments about one of the greatest ever Springboks, yet the van den Heever article, which is ****, has more than 250 comments.

As our Kiwi friends have illustrated, Venter is respected by all rugby fans – a real tribute to the game. I saw a program about him recently and I was shocked to see such a strong and proud man in a wheel chair, yet his attitude is fantastic, and I wish him all the best.

A true champion. This type of thing seems to happen to the good guys – Venter and Kruger.
