SuperSchools plan major derbies

The SuperSchools tournament will see the best of the North and South face off at Affies this weekend.

Last season’s No 1-ranked school Grey College (who make their debut appearance), Paul Roos, Paarl Gym, Paarl Boys and Glenwood are just some of the big names who will compete at the festival this year. A Wilderklawer Barbarians team has also been drafted, which include players from smaller Gauteng schools.

Some interesting first round clashes include Paarl Gym vs Grey College, Paarl Boys vs Glenwood and Affies vs Paul Roos.

Tournament director Cassie Carstens believes the tournament will be a huge success.

‘All the preparations are going very well,’ Carstens told ‘Some of the schools have arrived today [Thursday] while the rest will land in Pretoria tomorrow [Friday]. We expect fan base of over 20 000 people over the long weekend.

‘After the first round of matches, we will draw up the second round depending on the results. We want a strength vs strength format, but we also want to have a North vs South rivalry going. It all depends if the two schools haven’t organised a match against each other later this year.’

Carstens added that Springboks Pierre Spies and Morné Steyn will also be involved over the weekend.

‘Pierre will give a speech at the supper on Friday night while Morné and [Bulls kicking coach] Vlok Cilliers will have a kicking session with the boys on Sunday,’ he said.

‘On Monday evening we will also have a prize giving ceremony where we will award trophies to the two schools who played the most attractive rugby on each day. We will also have a Player of the Day for each round.’

The tournament kicks off on Saturday morning while round two takes place on Monday.
