North boys dominate south

Affies recorded a 18-6 win over Paul Roos in the feature match of the SuperSchools on Saturday.

The festival created a north vs south rivalry and it was the northern schools who dominated as hosts Affies, Monument, Waterkloof and Grey College achieved wins against Cape teams.

The feature match saw Affies face Paul Roos. The Stellenbosch school came off a good campaign at the recent St John’s festival and beat Grey PE 43-37 last weekend, but they would face the biggest challenge in Affies, who are recognised as the No 1 school in the country at the moment.

It was a close contest in the first half as Affies only lead 8-3 at the break. Paul Roos opened the scoring with a penalty from wing Gideon Meiring. However, Affies took the lead through the boot of Warren Gilbert and a try from wing WJ Strydom.

Paul Roos scored first after the restart with Meiring kicking his second penalty. But Affies sealed the result as Strydom completed a double and Gilbert kicked another three-pointer.

Meanwhile in other results, Florida picked up a hard-fought 20-15 win against the Wildeklawer Barbarians in the opening game. The Barbarians went into half-time 10-8 ahead, but second half tries from hooker Wian Fourie and wing Ramon Samuels secured the comeback victory.

EG Jansen made light work of Framesby as they triumphed 19-0. Flank Chris Kotze, No 8 Ruaan Lerm and inside centre Ruan Barnard touched down for the Gauteng locals.

Waterkloof held on for an 8-3 win against Boland Landbou as they scored all the points in the first half. Kloofies fullback Thys Smit crossed the chalk for the decisive try.

Flyhalf Johan Goosen kicked 13 points in Grey College’s 23-12 win over Paarl Gym. Wing Ruwellyn Isbell and scrumhalf Inus Keyser scored tries for Grey while flyhalf Lance Ruthford kicked all Gimmies’ points.

HTS Middelburg and Diamantveld battled out to a 3-3 stalemate. Fullbacks Tiaan Swartz and Kobus Bezuidenhout traded penalties in the second half for their schools respectively.

Paarl Boys recorded the only win for the Cape teams as they beat Glenwood 11-9. Glenwood led 9-6 until late in the game thanks to three penalties from Fred Zeilinga, but a late try secured the win for Paarl Boys.

Monument had an easy win against Outeniqua as they triumphed 25-6. Lock Paul Willems, centre Michael Bean and scrumhalf Quintin Marais scored tries for the Gauteng school.

The second round kicks off on Monday 26 April.
